also, is it safe to drive around town until I can fix it or is this a DO NOT TOUCH until fixed sort of affair?

The dealership diagnosed my 2002 Miata by saying the "actuator control valve is sticking". I was quoted $1600 to replace the oil control valve and variable timing actuator. There is a TSB for this issue, I believe, unfortunately I am wayyy out of warranty. Is there any place or way to fix this...
