    Protege High Mileage Club

The low power seems to me the timing may be off since they just did the belt and it had power prior to the overheating condition. That doesn't explain the MAF codes as this could be a result of coolant damage?!? My 02 protege hit 225 degrees on my scan gauge when the front froze closed during a...

2002 Protege Automatic to Manual Conversion

That's what I used as well. So I went ahead and bought an abs manual harness because I believe they are identical. Again, I only have this manual for reference but I don't see a difference. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

2002 Protege Automatic to Manual Conversion

I've looked at a wiring diagram, and I don't see any difference between the two harnesses (ABS vs non ABS). The ABS system does not plug into the engine harness and the ABS harness also has a connector for the VSS which plugs into a dummy sensor. I could be wrong, but that's what I have found...

2002 Protege Automatic to Manual Conversion

Quick question. What do you mean by the ring gear? The ring in the trans or the VSS? I took the dummy sensor out of the trans today and I found a pink ring gear inside. The trans was from a 2001 ABS Protege. I think I have some luck if this ring gear will work. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

2002 Protege Automatic to Manual Conversion

New question. I'm trying to figure out how if an abs harness will work with a non abs car without issue. I won't be installing the abs module so I don't foresee an issue. Would this cause a cruise control issue? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

2002 Protege Automatic to Manual Conversion

Real quick question. Why would I need a radiator? The manual trans doesn't utilize a cooler correct? I would assume I would just use the auto radiator and plug the trans line ends. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

2002 Protege Automatic to Manual Conversion

Thank you. I already have the ECU so that part is done. I wonder what the complications would be if I didn't obtain that harness? Depending on what I would have to "live with" may determine if I want to swap harnesses. I do like to do things correctly though. I also found this writeup online...

2002 Protege Automatic to Manual Conversion

Hello All, I have recently found a full donor car at a local pick a part and was able to obtain the items listed below. This thread is not asking how hard this will be, or what will it cost, as I am going full force ahead with this and buying a manual protege is not an option for me. My current...

Automatic Transmission Self-Flush Procedure (2002 LX)

I do a drain/fill every 30k miles in mine and it seems to be doing well at 180k miles. Obviously, there is still plenty left behind so I was just curious if anyone else did any other tricks or just the normal drain/fill procedure listed in the mazda service manual.

Automatic Transmission Self-Flush Procedure (2002 LX)

Hello All, I have looked through the history of "transmission" posts and don't see many with details on how each member is doing their own transmission fluid exchange on their automatic proteges. I have dropped the pan and change the fluid/filter 30k miles ago and would like to change the fluid...

    Oil Change Intervals

I use Amsoil Signature Series which is good for up to 15k Miles in most engines, and 25k miles in specific engines. I base all of my changes off of oil samples showing my metal readings and TBN. The Amsoil is allowing me to go 10k miles or 1 year for my changes with no harm to the engine. This...

which transmission fluid should I use for 1998 mazda protege?

You can use any ATF that meets the correct rating for the car. Replacement will do nothing but help for longevity, and I have also read the auto's love to burn up the fluid so changing is a good idea. I am an Amsoil dealer, so I run Signature Series ATF. Shifts like a dream. Its pricey, but any...
