I was able to successfully connect both my phone and tablet through bluetooth this morning. Just as you described Tex, there are separate options for phone and music.
I like it.... and I'm not a fan of the old Highlander either. I don't really see the resemblance that you are apparently. I'm with Tex though, Helen Keller could have designed an improvement to the current model.
I found a decent tablet mount that fits in my passenger side cupholder and have been using a 7" Android tablet in my car for Waze and Podcasts. Is there any way to connect my phone at the same time though so I can still receive calls?

That's probably why it's not working then. Check the settings of your music app and see if there is an option to enable notifications or extended notifications. Once that info shows up in notifications, the AutoAudio app can grab it to send to your stereo. For instance, I'm using the GoneMAD...
Just out of curiosity, did you read the notes on the app page on Google Play? There's something about having to give the app access to notifications for it to be able to work. Also, make sure that whatever music app you're using is showing current song/artist info in your notification drawer as...
Out of curiosity, can you plug one of those phones in to the USB port and tell us how long it takes to start playing? Then turn off the car all the way leaving the phone connected, wait a couple minutes, then turn it back on and see if it resumes where it left off?
