Towing - pop up trailer towing with their CX-5

Sadly I did not do more research myself to fact-check the salesperson who told me I could tow a trailer as heavy as 2000lbs. I had been looking at trailers with a dry weight of around 1500lbs, thinking that would be max. However, the owners manual says that Total Tow Weight has to include 2 passengers, the hitch weight and all the gear and stuff. I had not accounted for the 2 passengers or the hitch weight. Here's where I'm unclear - if you are not towing 2 passengers, why do you need to allow for their weight? Can anyone "weigh in" on this?

Here is a recent thread on the same subject. As I understand, the total weight including everything excluding the vehicle is 2,000 lbs.

Depends on the country as to the allowable towing capacity. It is as high as 2000 kg, with trailer brakes and sane speed limits, in some countries.

Mine tows 3300+ lbs beautifully, better than I do.

An R-Pod 180 with a full black tank that indicated only 1/3 full. That was 250 unexpected pounds.
