Strange issue with A/C Mazda Protege 2002

Hi!,
I have a strange issue with mi mazda protege 2002, when I turn the air position flow to the feet position, it engages the air conditioner (even if the AC button is in off position). I dont know if this is normal but I think no. Any advice???

I know that of you switch to "Defrost", the AC will turn on (at least in most cars) but if you are in fact switching to the feet position and the AC is activating, this is the first time I've ever seen mention of that type of incident.

Yes, this is strange... I search on the owner's manual and there is no information about this. Do you think is the switch the problem??
