I have a radio shack radar detector. I got it from my best friend (I have great friends)
It retails at about $80 or so and I don't know how well it works. I haven't gotten a ticket with it but that is partly because I pay attention when I drive. It does give me warning but not much. Radar detectors are like computers. If you don't have the latest one, then you are at risk of it not working. And here in texas they are legal.
Yeah, the lawz are using the instant on KA band that takes about a second to get your speed. The only way you know that they are scanning is when they pull the trigger on it, and they are either scanning you or some poor fool ahead of you, which gives you time to slow down. Then there is the LIDAR (laser). If you ever see LASER across your detector, you may as well pull over or try to play it off. It gets your speed in about 1/3 of a second! A cop accually let me scan someone, and it was damn fast.
yeah mine picks up KA and laser but it really doesn't matter. With that instant on you are pretty much screwed. My answer to it is just don't speed. I have problems with that but I must control it or else tickets will be issued and then there goes my integra which would suck alot.
I don't use radar detectors, I think they are a waist of money...
The only way the radar detector works is if the radar is on. Most speed traps I've seen around Denver, they shoot you when they see that you are already speeding. The gun just verifies the speed they estimated you were going. They get your speed before you detector gets pinged. You can still get a ticket even without them using radar.
The cops around here also time you. They have two fixed points and actually time how long it takes for you go through the section of road. Then they use a neat little formula, time and distance equals speed. They nail you and your detector doesn't even blip.
Anyway, I have my own ways of dealing with speeding if I ever get pulled over to begin with.
i have a fuzzbuster i got it at best buy it was 120$ i have it for about 2 years only the highwaycops use radar around here. i got one ticket when the cop had the radar off then when i got close he switched it on and my detecter said ka 9 so he got me 142$. but ive had good luck no tickets yet with my mp3 got pulled over twice but one was for my temp tags and the other he gave me a watning for speeding in a school zone
The best thing is radar jammers. When it detects the radar, it sends an FM signal back with the bouncing radar. The result is a bogus reading like 200mph or 2mph. It make the radar malfunction. But you better make sure it is legal in your state. They are around $500.
Another kool device is a Laser jammer. The best one out is made by Lidatek. It mounts to your license plate(I couldn't use it). They are Federal leagal because the FCC does not regulate their use. They use LED's to throw off the Laser giving you time to slow down.
very interesting linuxnija i got the passport escort 8500 two, and also own another of phantom 3 laser jammer that sucker works good i was going 110mph down to the navy-base racing a civic smoked his a** but anyways i had time to slow down to about 70mph before i came up close to him sitting on the right side off the highway and for a second my butt puckered up. i actually thought he was going to follow me or something cause of my loud a** exhaust but he stayed there radaring other people, lucky me. and the laser jammer works good to last year i went to visalia off the highway there was a little thing on the side that showed how fast u are going but it seemed like it didn't work cause there was traffic but it showed like i was doing 68mph when i was going 69-70mph. So i went back 4:00 a.m. in the morning where there was no cars around as soon as my radar was beeping i sped up to about 78-80mph and it said i was going 72mph. i don't know if that thing was accurate or not but felt happy it worked untill now i don't know if it'll be the same.
i've got a cobra 9200 since last december. no ticket at all so far. but one thing i found interesting is that user has to learn the patterns of detectors no matter what's your make or model. then i can say when and where the alarms are true or false.
and i believe no one speeds all the time. a good excuse is i don't know when will i need it so i get it in case.
