PCB's Unbuild Thread

I noticed steam rising out from under my hood a few days ago so I took a look and found my overflow tank was empty. I filled it back up but found it empty again yesterday then noticed a small drip coming from the top of the radiator.

I decided to try the easy thing and put some "Liquid Aluminum Radiator Stop Leak". I did a bit of research and found out that the new age stuff is much better than the old school stuff. The old school stuff is gooey and can plug up your radiator but the new stuff is far less inclined to do that, and it actually helps the system conduct heat.

I followed the directions and it appears to have worked.

A couple of people said it plugged up their heater core, but I have lots of heat in the cab, and it may actually be hotter with the liquid aluminum in it.

So far, so good.

Well, the stop leak didn't work, so I decided to swap out the radiator with the one from the parts car.

I was dreading doing it, thinking it would end up taking me a week to finish, but it turned out to be quick and easy !!
I did snap and strip a few rusty bolts but I managed to work around it with the bolts from the parts car.

I got it installed and all appears to be well with no leaks.

I'll drive it a few times to see if everything is good.

I ended up putting the other half can of stop leak in with the new rad.
It's supposed to stay there waiting to plug up any new leak, and it's supposed to help conduct heat and bring down the water temperatures.

My heater is still blowing hot so it didn't plug it up.
It may actually be hotter now because it should conduct heat better?

Good to hear the rad was an easy swap! How was bleeding the cooling system afterwards?

I ran into a bit of a problem with that.
I drained the fluid until it stopped dripping then swapped the rads and went to refill the rad.
Our cooling system holds 7.5 liters and I had a 3.78-liter jug of unmixed fluid, so I thought I'd just dump the jug in, and then top it up with distilled water.
I didn't even get the full jug in and the rad was full??

I was like, WTF?
So, the engine itself didn't drain, and I just put straight antifreeze in!

I managed to siphon off a bit of fluid from the top of the rad and then top it up with water, (a turkey baster from the dollar store works great)
The fluid in the engine was a 50/50 mix and I figure as long as I don't go past a 30/70 mix, I should be fine.

I went for a couple of short drives to test for leaks and to stir the fluid and make sure that the fan comes on and I'm still blowing heat in the cab.

So I didn't really have to bleed the system, because it never drained. Lol

I've got a rad fluid tester that I'm going to use today to check it and I'll have to drain some and top it up with water if it's too rich.

I should have just mixed the fluid before pouring it into the rad.
Duh. Lol

I didn't take any pictures because I just wanted to get it done and it was feeling like a chore that might take me a week to finish, but it went quite smoothly with luck on my side.

No, .
My parts car came with some fancy West Wing spoilers but they're all broken and they don't fit right.

The rad is doing fine.
No leaks and no overheating.
I checked the fluid and the mixture is okay.
There's lots of heat in the cab.

I ditched the Google and now all my pictures have been deleted.

I'll post my pictures here on this forum now.

Maybe I can just upload a huge file with all the disorganized pictures??
