Engine Clicking

In the cold weather, does anyone notice a clicking sound in the engine? Seems to quiet down after driving, but it's kinda loud. I've got the 2007 engine.

I hear the same clicking sound when the engine is warming and it goes away after it's warmed up...I thought I had read somewhere where it list a fix to this issue.

Yes, I also have a 2007 and have noticed what appears to sound like a lifter tapping a little at idle when I start the car for the first time in the morning. It only does it after it's been sitting all night, and only until it warms up. If I tap the throttle it usually goes away. I don't usually hear it any other times, and it doesn't seem to affect the performance, so I haven't really worried about it that much.

noise

I've noticed the same noise in the mornings, especially after a cold night outdoors, on my 2008.

Nice of you to link it with a castrol website Semrz1, but surely this issue has to be addressed and/or fixed another way by Mazda. Any long term side effects on the engine if one elects not to use the specialty m-oil?.

I thought I had seen this issue brought up by someone in a ford edge forum or lincoln....since it's the same engine we aren't the only one's - but I can't remember where I read about there solution. sorry

mee too....

it its true, I noticed when new how quiet the engine was, I needed to step on the gas to know if it was running. then after about 2 months started to do that valve lifter clicking noise when cool, gone when warm, now at only 4000 mil. I can hear it even with a warm engine. so its getting worse.
It has to be some bad quality hydraulic lifters, or bad quality oil, or both. I'll go with my dealer to complain about it, and tell u what they'll do.
hope mazda do something about it.(flame)(pissed)

just curious if you guys had the clicking during your first batch of oil, or if it also happened after you changed it. The oil loss during break in could drop the pressure enough to cause cold engine clicking. Using the wrong weight could cause it also.

This is a good example of why you should use the exact weight of oil Mazda recommends, too. And NOT Pennzoil.

I once had a car that was renowned for its sticky lifters, when cold it was so loud it was embarrassing.
However after advice from a friend (mechanic), I put in a high quality oil which was a little heavier than normal, it took a couple of oil changes to work best, but indeed it totally eliminated all the lifter noise.

clicking

My 2008 GT clicks as well. I've 10k miles on it and its been clicking since about 5000 miles, and only when its cold. I just took it in to the dealer and the se4rvice advisor said theres nothing that Mazda will do about it. But the same guy told me it was the Booster making that noise... I asked what a booster was-- he said it was like a turbo. I said it doesn't have a turbo, he replied its like a supercharger... I again said that it doesn't have one. needless to say, Im taking it too a different dealer next.

Clickling

So, took my 2008 awd GT cx-9 to another dealership. They kept it for 3 days and finally told me that the clicking sound is the Injectors, not the lifters and that there's nothing to be concerned about.

What do you all think?

On my other car, I found that different brand/grades of oils could affect the "clicking" noise. A search in the forums did confirm that...although I'm not sure why it would affect it.

I HAVE heard injectors that click, But the fact that this noise disappears after warm up, says that is lifters, and no harm is being done.

^ i wouldnt say that

Injectors run on a slightly longer duty cycle when the engine is cold, and on a shorter duty cycle when the engine is warm.

Cold idle is the longest relative duty cycle the injector is running on at idle. It's the situation when the injector cycle to engine noise ratio is the highest, allowing injector tick to really stand out.

Lifters in the 3.7L are fixed (non-hydraulic), therefore oil pressure/availability has no effect on lifter adjustment. It's true, nothing to worry about.

My CX9 has the same tappet noises that you mention. I noticed the tappet noises at about 300klm; these noises have progressively gotten louder and longer before they stop. As matter of fact they do not totaly go away, I can still hear them when the car has warmed up during the automatic transmissions up shift through 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears. I have had my car looked at by Mazda and two independent specialists both the independent reports suggest that there is a problem with the engine, but Mazda is refusing to accept that there is a problem and denying any responsibility so I am considering legal action. It is most definitely not the injectors making the noise. If we all continue to bring this problem to the attention of our respective dealers then something will be done about it.

engine click/tick noise

I haave my cx-9 for a week now, 500 miles on it. It has small knock noise when warm at idle. I assume the oil quality they put in these cars is not that good. Plus 87 octane might be the case too. I play on using 89 octane gas and Mobil 1 full synthetic in the car after 3000 miles. I heard these engines dont like synthetic oil, is that true? Does anyone know?
