Canoe/Kayak tie downs

I have a CX-5 that came with the front and rear tow eyebolts which work OK to tie down a canoe. I'd prefer hooks under the car, and on both sides. Has anyone had after-market hooks installed under the car? Is this even possible?

Wouldn't you be concerned about chafing if using a tie down under the car? How about tying to a tow hitch?

I've hauled our 14' tandem kayak many times with the CX. I don't know why you feel the need for tie downs under the car.

I have the factory rack on the CX and I simply secure the kayak to the rack, front and rear, and then to the front tow eyelet. The rope that goes from the front of the boat to the eyelet does touch the front of the hood and to prevent scuffing I apply a piece of 'cling' flexible vinyl under the rope. Never had any issues.

Check out the Yakima JayLow Kayak Carrier w/ Tie-Downs. They have good reviews.

I installed a strap loops under the hood and pull them out when transporting my kayaks or SUPs

I have these as well. The easiest, simplest yet secure solution. In the back, I used hitch or tie downs inside the hatch.
Another trick you can do is tie a large loop in the webbing. With hood or hatch open, position the loop centered around the hood/hatch latch. Close the hood/hatch, pull the loop tight and you have a very secure anchor. Just beware of sharp edges or points of abrasion.
