bwalt's build log - Turbo MSP with all the good stuff

Hello. I'm back. Still having fun driving and modding my MSP! I have a lot of changes planned and will post up progress here.

Highlights include fully built block and head, GT28RS turbo, Haltech ems, Mfactory gears + many, many supporting mods. It's gone 12.8 @ 112mph in the quarter mile and my goal is to break 11.99 one day.

More to come...

Oh man man a sub 12 second msp would be sweet. I see you have a fancy airbox, what intake mani is that? I love the red on the valve cover, kinda makes me wish I did mine in red.

I just saw you hit 112 on the 1/4 mile, I've hit 111 in my p5 but it took waaaaay longer than a 1/4 mile haha. Have you been on the dyno with this? How much boost are you pushing?

Last time I went on the dyno was over 3 years ago and it put down around 300hp.

Running 15psi most of the time, once in a while I turn it up to 18psi which is pretty much maxing out this turbo.

Man I bet that thing rips through the twisties. I'm hoping to get to 180 NA (at the flywheel haha) I'm still a good 5 years away from that. Do you race your msp? Or is this your classy daily?

I race at the local street legal events and daily drive from May-October when the weather is nice. And oh yes it rips :)

Went to the track on Friday, first time out with slicks too. I got some 225/50R15 Mickey Thompson et street drag radials and they hook up really well.

Made 7 passes and was able to get good numbers on 2 of them. One had a 1.9 60ft and the other was my best et/mph so far, 12.6 @ 113mph

Left lane - 1.9 60ft

Left lane - 12.6 @ 113mph. This run was fun because I was up against a twin turbo BMW M5, He's a bit faster but I got him off the line and he almost caught me by the finish.

To make the 15" weld wheels fit, I had to use protege 5 brakes. Rotors are Stoptech and pads are Hawk HPS

I also installed some mFactory axles. They're beefy, my only gripe is the boot clamps. They leaked grease and broke when i tried to tighten them. I installed some crimp style clamps and the problem was solved.

Had some free time and started surfing on here. I'm thinking about parting out my car. You'd really like my engine! :)

Your engine is awesome. Mine definitely lacks the cams and t3 turbo you've got. When your block was built did the machine shop use a torque plate?

Haven't a clue. Hahaha! Blaine Carmena of Carmena Performance built my engine. He had a 3rd party machine shop in Victoria do the block. I've reached out to him to ask. I'll let you know.

This is such an exciting thing to see!! glad to see it making good power and times at the track.

If i may ask- the axles and gears were they pricey? Also for the gearing- did you change up the ratios for highway driving?

Thanks :)

Mfactory axles and gears are pricey but well worth it in my opinion.

The escort 3.85 final drive and Mfactory gear combo made highway cruising more comfortable, less droney. I always found the stock protege gear ratios to be too short for my taste, rpms too high for cruising. Long pulls and less shifting is nice in a high powered protege!

Well this is unfortunate...

Tore down my engine this weekend after a compression test yielded poor results. I thought it was just gonna be a basic rebuild but once the bottom end came apart, things got expensive! I can't complain, this motor lasted 70,000 hard boosting kilometers with 60+ passes down the strip.

Looks like detonation got the better of my block and rod bearings :( I didn't notice any rod knock and the engine still made great oil pressure.

Cracks found in the bottom of cylinders #2 and #3

Rod bearings destroyed.

Went to the wreckers and got a core to rebuild. It looks to be a good candidate.

Also ordered new pistons and bearings. I'm going to have the rods checked and re-use if they're ok.

Water/meth injection will be used from now on. I should have done this a long time ago haha.
