Hi,

I have a Mazda 5 2008 that has the airbag error code 42 so have a look at the sensor and have found one of the pins has disintegrated. However, I managed to break the head of the second bolt when I was taking the shield off to get to the sensor. Here is a photo:

Any ideas how I can remove the bolt please?

Regards

Jay

Several options: Use penetrating oil (https://www.amazon.com/dp/ (commissions earned) with all

0) put 2 nuts on remaining bolt, try to lock them up against each other and see if you can screw out bolt
1) vise grips
2) bolt extractor http://www.harborfreight.com/9-piece-38-drive-metric-bolt-extractor-sockets-67894.html or https://www.amazon.com/dp/ (commissions earned)
3) cut slot in remaining bolt - remove with screw driver - probably will not be strong enough
4) drill out bolt & retap - however probably will require a new/larger bolt

Well that’s a misleading heading…

That looks like it can be easily remedied but since you have to ask, easiest way is to take it to a shop and let them take care of it since the part is off the car anyway. Should not cost much at all. Ask nicely (or lumped with a job) and they just might do it for free.

For DIY, if you don’t have a head to work with I’d say grind it down to a flat surface, use a punch to set a hole, and drill it out using a progressively larger bit. Whatever you do, make sure you use soak it with penetrating oil to loosen that rust. This cost more but works better. https://www.amazon.com/dp/ (commissions earned)

Thanks for all the suggestions. I managed to get it out by soaking in WD40 overnight and heating it with a gas torch.

I also successfully managed to replace the front crash sensor with a used one from a breakers and the air bag light has gone! If anyone has the same issue please feel free to drop me a line if you need help with this problem.
