I have a 2016.5 CX-5 and am considering the dealer's upgrade for Android Auto.

I have a Samsung Galaxy 8+

I am confused about Android Auto and have never used it.

If I get this package installed, is there anyway that I can plan my own trip, my own routing rather than relying on the navigation system in the car? I assume it uses Google Maps.

Any advice and any posting of resources appreciated.

TIA

I've used Android Auto both on my phone and on a rental. Basically it mirrors some of your phone display onto the screen with specially crafted apps. So yes - you can have Google Maps or Waze to perform navigation using the CX5 screen. You'd use the Google Maps/Waze interface to enter the location. However, if you have the HUD, directions will not display there. Bear in mind the touchscreen is disabled so you'd have to use the rotary wheel or voice controls.

If you're looking to do more selective planning - such as using a PC to plot a route, drag the map around, then send that planned route to your phone use those particular waypoints - I don't know for sure if that works with Android Auto. Theoretically it should work.
