Openpilot with level 2 automation

While browsing on web, I stumbled on "Openpilot". There are few vehicles that are supported here but not mazda

CX-9 has required basic gizmos to make it lane centering and do level 2 automation and I wonder why Mazda did not do it? Perhaps, better processor and software ? Liability? Why are they behind?

Also I was wondering if they will ever provide level 2 automation in future to our cars that have the basic hardware in place? I guess only Apple and Tesla provides this kind of service

I think it may mostly be due to software, meaning they didn't dedicate enough resources to development. Could also partially be due to their "Driving Matters" mantra. That said, we should be able to add openpilot to the CX-9, provided someone is willing to pay $900 and learn how to code the software for the CX-9.

Lane Centering is actually available from Mazda, just not in the NA market.

Not necessarily. There are a lot of free resources on YouTube, online forums, Discord, etc. to learn the basics yourself (if you have the interest/time/dedication).

i drove the lexus RX-L with lane centering on a long drive down from RI, and honestly didn't like it,
You definitely feel the steering torque trying to center the car even though you think you are centered.
I like the LKA on the mazda better as it is non intrusive and only kicks in when you start to veer off the lane.
Also the RX i drove was a 2019 and probably had the older gen ACC, because stop and go was pretty jerky, but following traffic and adjusting speeds was pretty smooth.

Most newer vehicles now offer a choice

1. Let you steer - only apply torque when you drift out - (Mazda)
2. Let the vehicle steer itself - (Lane Centering, Trace, etc.) - (Toyota, Kia, Hydunai, etc., etc.)

Mazda is falling behind by not offering a CHOICE. (That's why I'll be trading in my CX9 for a Palasades)
