First "mods"...

the first thing i want to do when i get my mazdaspeed is throw a boost gauge on there.i dont know how i want to mount it though. ideas? other than just standard gauge holders. are there any pillar mounts that would work with the mazdaspeed?

second mod planned is turbo timer.. my question about these is that some say you hook them up via wiring harness. i dunno if they are even gonna make any harnesses for us, and if they do it might take them like months or whatever. so do you NEED a harness, or can you figure it out yourself?

thanx

Somebody was working on an A-pillar replacement with gauge cups. That way you don't have to hack up your A-pillar trim to mount it. It might have been the same place that had the replacement for the trim on top of the steering column with a single gauge cup in it. That wouldn't be bad if you only wanted a boost gauge, but if you're planning on adding anything else I'd go with a different option. I'm considering mounting gauges in the space under the stereo. The A-pillar mount might be ok, but I'd prefer something stealthier.

Hopefully we will get something for the A-Pillar. But for now I have a 1 DIN 3 gauge pod that is going under the stereo. I am going to pull that little door and put this in its place.....

First mod is Boost, EGT, and probably oil pressure....or something....I already have an A/F but I don't know if I want to use it.......

Second thing....get the exhaust taken care of.....the cat is clogging the system....so I am either going to remove it or move it further down the line.....

Get the steering column gauge pod. I love mine. It's not in the way on the pillar so that you hit your head on it as you are getting out of the car. And it's not blocking any of the other dash gauges. It's perfect.

If I were buying the MS Pro, the first thing I'd do is replace the whole exhaust system with a 3" exhaust. I'd order all the mandrel bent pipes from JC Whitney, then take them to a muffler shop and have them build it. The tubing will cost about $130, then the new muffler would be about $150, the instalation around $150. That is seriously the best "first" mod to do. Then I'd go with the boost controler and front mount IC. Then I'd build a water/alcohol injection system. Then I'd be right around 200whp.

What erks me is how do we do the mods without voiding the warranty? I know the exhaust is a no brainer cause it won't void the warranty. A boost controller would be nice, but what you would want to do is keep the factory wastegate hose, take it to a hardware store and find on just like it to cut. That way you can put the factory hose back on. It may be over kill, but just in case those MSP's have marked hoses. Or maybe it is all that smoke that is making me paranoid......

You can't use a bigger Front mount cause you can't put the stock back in all that easy......

I am all for more power, but not at the price of sacrificing my warranty....especially on an unproven car......

The stock IC is easy to put back in. All you have to do is take the bumper off. I've taken my bumper off so many times I think I could do it in less than one minute now. As for keeping the stock wastegate hose, I speak from experience, KEEP EVERYTHING YOU TAKE OFF THE CAR! I'm kicking myself for not doing that.

word. i am going to wait and see how everyone else mods thiers up, and also what the mazdaspeed dealers will offer in terms of performance mods. thats why the first mods that i want to do dont really affect performance.

is that avatar panties on a chair?? lol

i think mine will be an intake..
not sure whether i'll go for a short ram intake or spend the extra $ and get a cold air set-up. I don't think the cold air is really worth the extra money when all i'll get is an additional 1-2 HP? and it will be a hassle to get to the filter and clean it...it will be soo much more dirty down below rather than just in the engine bay.

does all 3rd generation protege intakes fit for proteges? (Mp5/Mp3/MS-P)?

No one makes and intake for it yet. It's not even out yet. The current ones are for non turbo Pro's. You'll have to custom make something. Too easy.

I don't like the idea of pulling my front bumper cover off everytime my car goes in for service. I hope I don't have to go in at all, as I will be doing my own oil changes. I don't want to run the risk of damaging anything.

And yes, those would be a pair of yellow thong underwear. I stole the pic from the SVTPerformance forums. Some guy with an '03 Cobra wasted some eclipse ricer. The ricer bet that he could beat the car (obviously not knowing what the cobra was). The wager was $100 from the guy or the ricer's girlfriend. The girl even agreed on the bet. The guy didn't have the heart to take the girl home to his wife, so he made her give up her panties. So that is a pair of yellow underwear strewn across leather '03 cobra seats.

remember that your car is turbo, even the regular engine mods that regular proteges have will have an increased effect b/c of the turbo. so instead of the avg 1-3 hp gain using a CAI, expect a 5-10hp gain. if you get hotter cams and cam gears, you'll definitely get alot more power than the NA setup. it's like the turbo multiplies the effects of these mods, where as the NA setup doesn't. a good idea would be to get a boost controller and a fuel pressure regulator. turn up the boost, inject more fuel and you'll definitely get alot more power.

I'd like to put three gauges in the space under the radio. Prophet (or anybody,) do you have a good link on where to buy a gauge panel or how to make one? I'd like to have a professional looking one with no screws or anything exposed on the front. I also don't want to do any cutting or drilling of the dash, so I can make it stock again if I desire.

Also, what gauges will match the dash? And how difficult are they to wire up (I guess an EGT might be the most difficult, but how about if I want boost, oil pressure and oil temp?)

Thanks,
Jason

Actually believe it or not, you can get a 1 DIN panel from http://www.cincysho.com

In their exclusive products page, they have a 3 gauge pod for the DIN location. I can't say it will fit, but it did fit my escorts 1 din location under the hvac controlds.

hey, will the Injen air intake for the protege (P5 / MP3) work for this car? i would assume it would but i dunno. ... .

After looking around at DIN-size panels, and not liking the ones at the SHO site, I think I'll order a blanking plate from Mazda and just make my own. The main advantage, I think, is that it will have clips to fit in the place of the storage cubby so I won't have to have screws or bolts on the front. The plastic should also match the black plastic on the car. If I'm really adventurous, maybe I'll paint it the same color as the silver trim, or try to do it in carbon fiber if I can find a good match for that.

Now, any advice on gauges? How hard are they to wire?

Hey If you guys wantin to keep your intercooler cold why dont you just get the nitrous express intercooler kit. It freezes the s*** out of it and it'll make your air cold! Or from what I hear. And about the boost controller man mazda is way to b****y to pull that off plus from experiance some ecu's can tell when you add or unplug certain devices. Like we sell choppers, for like corn and stuff and tractors, and those ecu's have a laptop program where you plug in the laptop and it tells when It was reset if anything was added and evrythin
