Went over to Richardson on Saturday to get a baseline run on teh MSM..
($45 for 3 pulls with a/f anytime.. not a bad deal)

Well, here's what I found.. I hoped for a bit more power, but I can understand that being how much driving around I was doing beforehand to find the frikken place (so heat, it was niiiiice & hot) It is texas and all...

Results? FRIKKEN RICH! Check out the a/f results! Off the chart! No wonder my exhaust tip is always black with soot.. Wonder if the cats glow?

Yeah, that can't be good for emissions

TIme to get some more air thru there!

Wow....de ja vu anyone? I remember seeing the same s*** on my msp exhaust tip...rich a/f ratios...hmmm Mazda are you listening? Fix your damn fuel maps dammit!

they did the same with the Rx8s as well.... Someone probably told them richer was better...

Give it 2 or 3 more years and we'll all be failing emissions due to fault cats from pouring fuel into them for so many years...

I'm pretty sure this specific car wouldn't come close to passing the underload dyno emissions tests we have here...

Just get a HKS Super AFR, easy fix. I just bought one for 198 shipped.
still doing a little researching here, but it doesn't sound like the way the miata TPS works the AFR will work properly...

the other option... Just add more air ;) Exhaust/intake/intercooler maybe?

Wow..That's crazy...The a/f Dips into the 10's before 5k rpms. That is very bad for hp. I can't believe mazda and their s*** fuel maps. If anything..It should not dip below high 11's!

couple of things.

Compressor efficiency is questionable

they are going for saftey not ultimate power. have to protect the car from idiots. And they are not going to go all out

they are not going for utlimate power with a new miata (err mx5 now i guess) in the works

The point is with a richness like that, you will inject fuel into your oil and kill its viscosity. Trust me I know, I got a new motor in my MSP because of it. :D Gotta love Mazda tuning.

Nope, doesn't work. Come check out the Protege threads, we have the same stuff happening over here. Exhaust/intake/intercoolers do help, but that damned AF ratio stays put below 10 after ~4K RPMS.

There's nothing you can do to help it except get a piggyback. Look at the Unichip dyno runs in the Protege thread. Much better all across the board.

Not a shock that it runs rich. Dunno if the cats would "glow"...since the fuel would keep things cool.

fine by me... I already ordered it :)

oh its funny to see people complain now. Mazda cars have always run rich up top as long as i can remember.

did Mazda overrate the Miata once again? The MSP dynoes higher and it's rated at 170 bhp. What the MSM rated at? 178 bhp?

just wondering the name of the shop that did the dyno. I will be in Dallas this weekend, and need to get some dyno runs in. $45 with a/f for 3 runs is a heck of a deal.

no, mazda didn't overrate this.. It was just that heatsoaked... Most of the rest of the cars have been pulling about 150-155rwhp, right where they should be.

and the shop that runs this dyno is in richardson on Jupiter.

$30 for 3 pulls, $45 with a/f. Standard deal, anytime. When I wnet that Saturday there wasn't even anyone in front of me. :D

155 whp sound much better.
I did not think the MSM suffer from such bad heat soak with a FMIC, but I guess it is still too small?
Did Mazda beef up the internals on the MSM? How safe is it to increase boost?
I was always under the impression that turbo cars made tremendous (sp?) amount of power until I bought the MSP. My old Integra GSR made ~140 whp bone stock n/a. That's on technology over 12 years old now.
