2019 2.5L Turbo, 310lbs of torque and towing capability?

:
cx5
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but shouldn't the massive increase to 310lbs of torque in the CX5 Turbo allow for at least a little more towing capacity than the standard CX5?

Could be a limitation based on the transmission or something else in the drivetrain or chassis even.

Vehicle weight, suspension, brakes all have to be factored into what defines a safe maximum towing weight. CX-5's base weight is still only 3655.

I dont think Mazda intends the CX-5 as a vehicle for someone interested in towing. As a result they have not made any of those necessary upgrades.

Possibly tires? OEMs are only 7.5 wide.

Imagine 450lbs tq on 6 wide inch tires for reference lol.

Varies by country and equipment.. many other markets get a 4000lbntowing cap on the 2.0 and 2.5

They recently standardized rules here on how trucks made claims on towing ect so consumers could compare apples to apples. I assume this also applies to cars and probably is not there or different in these other countries.

310 torque in the UK diesel tows 2100kg.

But the new model has seen the nose weight limit reduced from 88kg to 84kg. Other countries appear to have some weird rules with such as Australia requiring 10% of the MTPLM, caravan gross weight. we only aim for 5 to 7%.

It seems like maybe the Mazda US lawyers set the towing limit rather than the Mazda engineers. The added torque should allow you to pull more weight than the standard CX5

Wheelbase, transmission, brakes are all factors also, not just engine power.

Stated towing limits in the USA tend to be lower than in Europe because the USA has a hodgepodge of rules and speed limits when towing. Some states are looser than others so to limit liability manufacturers go with the most conservative (ie, lowest) weight because they assume drivers will drive at highway speeds where stability can become an issue.

Good article on this here Something to think about the next time you get passed by a guy doing 90 with a fully loaded trailer.
