Mazda CX-5 Ride & Drive Event in Dallas

Received the invitation to Mazda CX-5 Ride & Drive Event held by Mazda North American Operations on April 28th via an email:

The Shops at Park Lane
8080 Park Lane, Dallas, TX 75231
Saturday, May 6 11am 7pm
Sunday, May 7 11am 7pm

The location is near the most prestige North Park shopping mall in Dallas. I was wondering how can we have a good test drive experience in that area where even the parking space is scarce. I urged my wife to go with me especially she might be able to do some shopping afterwards. We went in the morning as we wanted to beat the crowd. It took us driving around for 20 minutes and couldn't find the place. We parked our 2016 CX-5 GT AWD in the parking ramp and started calling Security for The Shops at Park Lane as nobody answered from other phone lines. We finally got direction and it's in walking distance from us. We saw several people wearing black Mazda T-shirt and trying to talk into pedestrians passing by to test drive the new Mazda CX-5. The girl was happy as we actually were willing to do it without even say anything to us. I only signed up for passenger and wife as a driver. She needed to take breathalyzer which is our first experience of doing it.

There're 5 2017 CX-5's for the event and only 1 is AWD. Of course we requested the AWD CX-5 which has beautiful Soul Red Crystal. Bruce who is the "Product Specialist" rode with us and I was sitting in the back. New CX-5 is definitely lower as I felt I was sitting in a hatch-back instead of a CUV. For some reason the rear seating area is tighter than 1st-gen CX-5. The first thing Bruce started to talk was Mazda has put lots of efforts to quiet down the interior. Unfortunately the event area is crowded with slow-moving vehicles and Bruce didn't let my wife to get on the Central Expressway. The whole test drive basically is a one-block circling around and back to the event location with a total driving time about 5 minutes of stop-and-go traffic. After the test drive was done my wife said the new CX-5 AWD feels nimbler and peppier than our old CX-5 AWD. She prefers lower ground clearance and the smaller hatch-back feeling. She likes the red color and she would want a 2017 CX-5 instead of a 2016.5 I was searching for replacing our hail-damaged 2016 CX-5. She did complain to Bruce that there's no CD player and was bothered by the constantly-on headlights with DRLs (after I made her aware of that of course! ;))

I declined to do this kind of short test drive in a very limited environment. I can do much better at my Mazda dealer.

It's funny Bruce insisted 2017 CX-5 has a "tan" interior until I wanted him to check the Mazda website! He still swore he personally saw one and I told him that 2017 CX-5 with tan interior must be a special-made CX-5 for his MNAO CEO!

Bruce also suggested giving any comments about 2017 CX-5 at MNAO website and he guaranteed someone will read it. (whistle)

Good to know that your wife likes the 2017 CX-5. How about yourself, any change in heart after the event? Isn't the memory seat function alone (or the improved Bose speaker system as you've pointed out before) tempting enough to trade for its styling (assuming you're still unconvinced you like the latter)?

If wife likes the 2nd-gen CX-5, then we're going to get a 2nd-gen CX-5 eventually no matter how I like the 1st-gen or not. Got to keep my wife happy ⋯ ;)
 
Mazda also hosts test drives at international auto shows. I dont know if Dallas-Fort Worth hosts one. I drove a 2016.5 CX-5 at the Chicago Auto Show last February. 2017s were not available at the time. All of Mazdas models are offered for a test drive and not just the CX-5. You choose which model you want. The test drive circuit was underneath the massive McCormick Place convention center where theres a labyrinth of utility roads. A Mazda employee in the passenger seat guides you because its easy to get lost driving around it. After the test drive you then answer a short questionnaire on a PC of what you think of the vehicle and receive a Starbucks gift card.


It was a light test drive because you cant really test the car for its acceleration. The utility roads are narrow with lots of support pillars. Since then, I test drove a 2017 CX-5 at a dealership where like you said, a better demo of a car can be experienced.
 
Maybe they changed the seat design in the rear hence it appears narrower (scratch)

From all the photos and clips I have seen, the rear seats appears to be designed primarily for 2 occupants.

The tight space feeling in the back seat was from when I got in from left rear door and was trying to move to the right rear, my shoes got stuck between central console and rear seat. It has never happened in my 2016 CX-5. It had nothing to do with the Bruce guy pushing his front seat far toward the back.

The basic floor plan hasn't changed from the previous model although they have lowered the rear seats so you don't sit as high up as you do before.

Maybe because of this the base of the seat cushions are now closer to the floor/front seats causing less access (scratch)

My impression from a test drive 2 weeks ago is that the rear seat dimension itself is not noticeably different from the 16.5, but the headroom above & behind is noticeably different.

I've seen a photo with both previous model and new model side by side and the cabin location appears to be roughly the same.

The whole idea of the new gen CX-5 is that they didn't want to mess around too much with the overall dimensions due to its global success which is a good thing. Just a few tweaks here and there, the platform is the same as before evident by the fact that with the differences in height and ground clearance evens each other out to be roughly the same height overall between the 2 gens?

Correct. Basically the things they concentrated on was the issues with the first gen such as NVH etc

So then the same as the 16. ;) That is one thing I don't like about the CX-5. It's a 4 passenger car. Come on now. Unless hauling dwarves or children, 3 adults comfortably in the back is a stretch.

That's why you go up a model size such as CX-9
 
I'm not annoyed because I can't fit 5 people. I don't need to do that, hence I don't need more seating. I want a usable middle seat. It's difficult to get a child seat in the center of the rear. The middle seat is like 12 inches wide.....

They had to compromise somewhere and as it turns out, it's the middle seat
 
I didn't attend the event because the diesel version was not available yet. Sounds like this event sucked compared to the ND Miata ride and drive event held at the Texas Motor Speedway. Now that was fun. Acceleration and braking test, small autocross drive and 3 laps on a short circuit track.
