What is the purpose of the small compartment to the bottomleft of the steering wheel?

Mazda CX-5 2014
I wish I could upload a picture, but I don't know how to do it with a URL. The small compartment is below the TCS OFF, Tire Pressure Set, BSM OFF. Has anyone figured out what this is for?

So it's useless if you don't have Navigation? Why wouldn't they just cover it up -.-
Because Mazda positioned CX-5 as cheaper model in her lineups. It also save some cost for them. You'll see a cover/door for this useless compartment in Mazda6 which has similar interior design. The same on dead pedal cover, glove compartment light, courtesy lights, rear AC vents, memory seat, one-touch up-down power windows, dash tweeters for Bose system, etc. are all found in Mazda6 but eliminated in CX-5.

I now store these in there

also a good location for a flashlight

I keep a small black cloth drawstring bag of quarters for parking meters rolled up in there. It blends in and stays put.
