Picked up our 2016 CX5 GT (for the wife) with factory remote starter. I must say I'm disappointed with the rage. Now with connected remote start app is there any thing physically needed to be installed in the car? Would it be done by satellite communications or cellular anyways looking for insight.

On our vehicles we have had aftermarket compustar remote starters with stated 3000 feet but realistically 1.5km no problem. The cx5 states 300 feet but really half of that on good days :(

I think the oe remote start was a 500+ or so option..

Anyways insight would be great

since i don't have the factory remote starter i cannot say for sure, but if my aftermarket remote start is any indication, i think you need a separate module installed to use the mazda mobile start app (plus pay the subscription fee). when i had my Viper module put in, they put in a remote starter + Viper module + pay SmartStart subscription. it uses my cell phone signal to activate it (thus virtually unlimited range).
