Hi everybody, In July I purchased a CX5 GT in titanium flash mica. Absolutely love everything about it! This is my first new car purchase in over 20 years and want to maintain the beautiful exterior. My question is regarding how long you should wait until waxing a new car. I've be told in the past that you should wait a year on new paint but I don't know if there's any truth to it. I was thinking of waxing before the winter arrives. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Your paint job is at least 4 months old. That's plenty of time for paint to cure. As the Nike ad says "Just do it!"

You don't need to wait as your factory paint is cured way before you buy the car.

And after waxing it, take pictures of it several different times during the day from the same spot... I love the way the color changes on that TIT FLASH!(boobs2)

Modern car paint can be waxed as soon as you get the vehicle. I waxed mine the first weekend after I brought it home.

Bought mine last Saturday and waxed her today! You really get to appreciate the styling of this car after waxing it all over.

I waited 2 1/2 years after taking delivery of my CX-5 before I put the first coat of wax on it.

Didn't seem to hurt it, looks great!

Modern cars are painted and then cured under infrared lights so the paint is fully cured well before it ever makes it to the dealer lot. Wax the car when ever you like. MikeM I believe has a white cx-5. The white and soul red are three step process for the paint where the other colors are a two step process, color then clear, so those two premium colors may be a bit harder durabable finish. I know my dealer "washed" the car after the shops car wash system was closed for the day. They washed it with rags and soapy water in a bucket. It must have been dirty water and dirty wash rags cause it caused a lot of marring that I had to polish off right away.

I'd highly recommend using a claybar on your first wash of the new car. Our CX-5's endure a lot of environmental exposure on their way to their dealerships. Between the ships, trains, and car trailers, your paint has been exposed to hundreds and hundred of miles ... even though the engine is off. And while they use protective stickers on some of the panels, those leave their own brand of residue and streaks.

Wash, clay and wax. Your new car will look incredible.

I agree. It can only help.

(When washing, do the two bucket routine, second bucket to rinse the micro-fiber wash mitt.)

Better to wax it ASAP. The CX5 is made in Japan, shipped on a carrier, and then depending where your dealership is. They put it on a car carrier (typically) but some have noted that they can be shipped by rail. If the latter is true, that is not good, as you will get rail dust on the paint. That requires clay bar use prior to waxing. Clay bar is time consuming and tedious but it does clean out the paint imperfections like rail dust.

My CX5 was shipped from the ocean port via truck carrier straight to the dealership. The paint sticker protection film was still attached when I got it. The paint was very smooth so no clay bar required on mine. You can feel the paint smoothness with the back of your fingers. I had no contaminants.

Here is what I recommend:

1 -Wash with Dawn soap (it really removes any grease and other dealer waxes) It won't harm the paint but DON'T use Dawn AFTER you wax it, use car soap which is not as aggressive.
2 - Clay bar (if needed)
3 - Use ZAINO waxes (no white residue and no carnuba - they use synthetic polymers which are better, last longer and easier to apply)
4 - DON'T use high pressure car washes. Hand wash the car. Takes 30-45 minutes. You need the exercise anyway ;)

I agree with littlebear, but I stopped using Zaino on the Mazda and use P21S now. It also does not leave a chalky residue.Being retired and living in Florida I wax once a month plus a extra coat of 3M show wax on the hood during lovebug season, which makes it easy to remove the dead ones.Oh yeah Zaino on my Mustang GT.

I love P21S, works great.

I use a different combo depending on the car. I use autoglym HD on my British car, P21S on my Japanese cars. No real reason why, I also use Meguiar's spray wax during summer season in between real wax coats.

Washed, clayed, then Sonax Netshielded within a week. And clayed again before XPEL'd the front end.

...When Mr. Miyagi tells you to.

Had my CX-5 about 5 weeks now. This coming Saturday I'm having my detailer detail it and add a nano-ceramic coating. Basically its a wax job that lasts several years. Had it done to my BMW and was amazed with the results
