Skyactive Tech

Great video. Thanks for posting. For those not familiar with the development of the Mazda 3 w/SkyActiv Tech, this explains why the 2012 car with the last generation body and the first use of the SkyActiv 2.0 engine had "only" a 12:1 compression ratio. It did not have room in the firewall to accept the 4 into 1 exhaust header which allowed for the bump to 13:1 CR on the current generation car.

Great little informative video. I keep learning new tidbits about the amazing things Mazda is doing. This video covers the main reasons I was compelled to purchase the 2013 CX-5, the first model year of a new platform and the first vehicle with the complete suite of Skyactiv technologies. My ownership experience has been superlative which, to me, confirms the wisdom of the direction Mazda has taken.

The next video that played ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NXrmYB7L0Y ) was even more jam-packed with info and is well worth the watch when you have a spare 30 minutes. If you learn 10 units of new information in a typical half-hour evening news show, you will learn about 120 units of info here.

So yes, you're right about the 30 min video that follows:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NXrmYB7L0Y
Lotta' good stuff. One clarifying point for me was I was never sure what the relationship between the three SkyActiv chassis was. This video makes it very clear that the CX-5 and the Mazda 6 use essentialy the same chassis while the 3 uses a smaller one. And now of course the 2 and the CX-3 share a third platform.

Have you ever done autox in the z4?

That 2nd video was great, full of interesting information about the Mazda manufacturing processes and way of thinking. I had a friend that found the whole thing interesting too.

I remain amazed at the R&D dumped into an econo-CUV. I just had no idea it mattered so much until I bought one and saw how bloody dog-eat-dog this market segment was, or how large it was.

The SkyActiv suite of technology was developed for the entire Mazda product line, not just the CX-5. As such, the cost of development is spread over several different vehicles and was largely driven by government regulation. Like everyone else, if they wanted to continue selling in the lucrative North American market, they had to do something to get their fuel mileage up dramatically.
