Problem with replacing rear emblem

I removed my rear emblem today that got scratched up to replace it it with a new one. Once I got the emblem off I used adhesive remover to remove the glue. The problem I have know is that some of that adhesive remover got onto the area behind where the emblem sits. It seems to be some very thin foam tape that seals that plastic piece to the metal door. Do I know need to remove that piece too and redo the deal between the pieces or should I just add some silicone sealant like black rtv or just leave it be? My consern is water getting back there are causing issues.

I don't have any pics of the said problem. I did take some ultra black RTV gasket maker and applied a small amount to where the piece was separating from the rest of the door. Since my car is meteor grey you can barely see where it was applied and is hidden mostly by the top of the emblem.
