how does i-stop work for diesel engines

I hope this is the general forum.

I understand how i-stop works for petrol engines----whilst the engine is stationary, some fuel is injected into one cylinder where the piston is nearest TDC and fired.

But what about diesel engines? Being compression ignition, they require movement already to compress any fuel injected. So is the engine spun by an auxiliary electric motor, or how else is the initial motion induced?

can't help there only that it does i-stop. (i reckon the starter motor fires itself rather than having to push the button). It's also more likley to i-stop if the fan is not set to windscreen demist. Mine came on 100 yards down the road after being parked all day. outside temp was 18 deg.C
