Has anyone with a 2014 GT had to replace their windshield yet? I just got a nasty rock strike on the highway the other day and I will find out soon if its repairable. I am assuming it will be, but just in case it isn't ... do you have to go through Mazda? The reason I ask is the large console at the top of the windshield that contains the sensors for the wipers, emergency breaking, etc. I am worried that one of these glass companies might damage it replacing the windshield

Don't worry about it - if they break a sensor they will have to replace it. Even auto dealers farm out windshield replacements to specialists. But that assumes you need a new windshield. If you do, I recommend exercising your right to a real Mazda windshield (and that assumes there are aftermarket CX-5 windshields available which may not be the case).

I don't understand this new culture of worry in America that seems to have crept into our younger culture in the last 10 years. I don't recall worrying about every little thing when I was younger. Now it seems people worry about everything - even things beyond their control. Previously, we would just assume everything would work out (and it almost always did). If there was a problem, we dealt with it.

Being part of that culture, I can tell you where it comes from at least in my case: Lowest price wins, and fewer and fewer companies stand by their work anymore. I go with local companies who do, when ever I can, but the ability to do that is getting harder and harder. Its far easier to deal with a problem by avoiding it rather than trying to get people to "make it right" after the fact. Sad, but true. In this particular case, my CX-5 is the first Mazda I have ever owned, and the first vehicle I've owned that has anything attached to the windshield other than a rear-view mirror. "Worried" is probably not the best choice of words, more accurate would be "wanting a heads up" from anyone who has gone through this before.

I had a GMC that had the auto wiper function. I marveled at how well it worked, until the windshield needed to be replaced. I had an OEM windshield put on at the dealer and the auto wiper never worked as well as the original. I brought it back once so they could reglue the sensor to the glass, but it was never the same. The car was leased, and I lost interest. GMC did farm out the windshield, but they would stand behind any issues that may have arisen from the work. Being that your Cx5 is so new, should the glass need to be changed, I would have the work done at the dealer, they should stand behind their work.

Even when you take a car to a dealer, they often farm out windshield replacements to a nearby, high volume auto-glass shop. This is true across makes AFAIK.
