Ive been reading into this forum for a while even before i got my cx5, and there has been lots of helpful ideas and advice given. That being said--Ive been searching around the web for door sills for our cars, i found a couple nice ones on ebay that say "CX-5" on it, and i saw an illuminated on there as well. Has anyone gone around and installed door sills on their cx5 yet? If so, can you post up some pics of it on the car?

I ordered some Chinese ones off ebay earlier this month for like $26. Should be here any day. Slow boat is very slow this time of year...

i love the lighted door sills sold at non-"north american" dealers in blue illumination since the "cx-5" logo looks custom cut (not a 'universal' box window sill made into various makes & models i've seen on ebay) and the skid plate design looks clean compared to the chinavasion ones. that's just based on stock photos of all three lighted versions i've seen; but, actual photos of them would be nice to get a better idea of how they actually are.

for reference, here's the mazda "oem" accessory version in red illumination & yet another accessory us in the u.s. can't readily have:

Um, lets see. Approximately $170 us versus $26 dollars. Pretty much a no brainer.

Hi,

Here is a picture of mine. They look good in day light also, except the illumination is not that bright naturally. They look then more like white. That said I was planning to change the color of the light to white because I think it is more neat. I didn't install myself but took it to a shop. They charged $75 and all 4 of them are installed nicely. I ordered these from china. I have also ordered chrome door handles and such from there. All look good, I can send more pictures in the future. And the interior LED light is from corksport.

I dont know why the pic doesn't show up, here's a link http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/266/20120925203731.jpg/

price-wise, can't argue about that.

weeboom, thanks for sharing the pics. they look great.

for anybody with lighted door sills, how were you guys able to run the wires to the power? are the wires exposed or kinked at any point? concerned about it being kinked if it goes around to the black rubber seal & plastic portion or if any drilling is involved.

puddle.jumper I installed oem that i purchased from the UK.I had to access power form drivers side inside quarter panel. All plastic everything plus jack and all that stuff had to come off.It showed a green wire and violet wire to pull power and ground from, there is no green but brown so being color blind like i really am.I had to ask my wife for help, tried the brown nothing turned out to be the blue and white after getting out the ohm meter. If i had to do another install it would be very easy.In addition to the scuff plates I also installed led foot-well lights which used jumpers off the new harness for the scuff plates. My wife loves them really makes the interior upscale.

thanks tireman1. :)

i am curious, how were you able to purchase the oem ones from the uk? and how much did it end up costing -the sills alone, and altogether with the footwell and jumper harness? it sounds like a lot of work removing all the plastic trim pieces. did you need special tools? i saw special plastic dash pry bar tools on ebay but not sure if they're worth getting.

the footwell lights look great on the dealer site. i was contemplating doing something similar with led footwell bars from ijdmtoy. i would then have to figure out the wiring so they activate when the dome lights go off when the doors open.

I was thinking about ordering some of the stainless/non-lit sills but am concerned with the bottom of the door rubbing against it as it looked like the tolerance was rather close. Do they touch with the sills installed or is there enough clearance?

I finally got my eBay door sills last week, and installed them last weekend. Here are a couple of pictures I took today with the iPad. Forgive the terribly poor quality, just wanted to show how they look. These are simple kind, no lights, just silver/brushed effect. Took me all of 10 min to clean the area and install with already provided 3M tape. One is front (longer one), the other is back.

Hey 10X,
Thanks. We are unharmed but 3 fence panels blew out, a couple of window shutters fell, a big branch off the tree was broken. The main pain in the butt, still, is that we have no power with no clear estimate when it will be restored. The damage to the utility poles seems to be quite extensive here by us.

I was looking at these....is it true that these look as if they curl over the edge of the door sill, unlike the OEM ones? These seem to protect better than the OEM if they curl over the edge, but any issue with door seal interference? Thanks!

I got mine (in Feb) from Aliexpress.com this is the seller I purchased from http://www.aliexpress.com/item/2012-2013-Mazda-CX-5-LED-light-High-quality-stainless-steel-Scuff-Plate-Door-Sill/656303500.html. I would look around though, sometimes sellers are offering free/cheap DHL or EMS shipping which takes 1-2 weeks opposed to 1-5 weeks. I did not install them myself; the wire is ran under the side trim (pop rivets), into the loom under the steering wheel. There is a small fuse wired in as well. The front and back are lit.

Here they are installed

Thanks so much. Now the question is, how do you install them? Where did you pull power from? Or do you have to go to a stereo store or something so they can tap power and bring it out to the sills? Did you have to do any drilling? Thanks!

Chas,
I have these. I made the mistake of not adding extra 3M tape (highly recommend!) - only put them on with what they came with, and one (rear passenger) came off a month or two later because my 9-year old uses that door. Others are ok but maybe that's because I am careful not to step on it and I rarely have front passengers. They do "curl over" and it looks nice; I have not noticed any door seal interference. Hope this helps!

Does anyone know the proper wires to wire the LED Door sills to? I found a cool wiring schematic (http://am.mazdaserviceinfo.com/emazda/dealersystem/service/esi/en_us/SM/2013/CX5/mv/books/mvd09/html/0918_8.html) but could not find the proper wires. There is a harness under the steering wheel that when removed will turn off the dome lights, however, there were three wires in that harness that where hot, so I tried wiring to them, but then the door sills never turned off. Someone said to find the dome light ground wire, but i'm not sure why that would be necessary. If anyone could please assist Im sure I would not be the only one who would appreciate this. Thanks much.

it looks like its the blue/white wire on connector 0918-801 but I still would like to understand, where is the actual wire/harness and which parts of the interior plastics I need to take off. Also, my car is right hand drive so would the harness be on left side like on the US cars or right side? Hmm …

Also, my car is right hand drive so would the harness be on left side like on the US cars or right side? Hmm … OK. I did not install mine so I don't know what exactly is tapped into. I just know it's on the fuse box. I'll try to look tomorrow and see if I can identify which node they used ( I also have switchable ambient lights added so I may not be able to tell which is which). Like baron said, I remember the guy saying he used a ground to fade the lights. You can also use a relay, which was my original installation, but because they used an electro magnetic relay it made noise when it went off. After I complained about this another tech looked a it and wired it the better method, using the ground. In short, if you need to you can use a relay; just make sure you get a solid state 5 pin 12v relay, or you will hear buzzing when the lights fade.

Thanks for the reply.

I don’t have the footwell lights so I don’t really need the relay for the sill LEDs to fade out. I can see how nice feature that would be for the footwell lights though.

I have a look on the fuse box layout and the fuse for the interior lightning is in the engine compartment, not in the one inside the car (there are two fuse boxes) so I don’t think I can wire it up to that.

I had a look a the various schematics in the above link but it does not really show clearly which part of the plastic do I need to remove to access the harness which carries the blue/white cable I need to tap into. I will have a look simply under the dash if I can see any harness cables there , fingers crossed there will be one with blue/white cable !

ok, so I wanted to give it a go tonight using a voltmeter to find out, where can I tap into power.

I am really struggling.

I checked two harnesses, one close to driver side feet and one under the door sill plastic cover. They both have white/blue and brown and violet color cables however, NONE seem to carry any power. I used one of the metal nuts as ground and checked all three wires while the switch on top lights is set to "door".

I am really struggling here, can someone help ?

here is a pic of diagram I followed and harnesses/cables I was tapping into - click on the photo to see bigger picture:

Omarko, you are in the wrong place. I tried there a couple of weeks ago and the best I could do was to get them to turn on, but could not get them to turn off. Make sure you print that wiring diagram. Pages 2 and 3 are more helpful but I only ever could get page 1 to show on my computer screen.

I ordered door sills from ebay ($25), and the two longer pieces for the fronts were all bent here and there. I probably can't straighten it out unless I take off the bonded rubber trims and then I would still need a big steel work table and mallet or something to flatten it, but even then it would be hard to do because the letters are there.

I don't think these were damaged during transportation but from low quality manufacturing.

edit: I ended up putting 3M automotive film over the places I wanted protected. Looks much better than the ebay door sill too. I threw away the ebay door sill crap.

My 2009 6 has that option. I never got them because of the cost and it looks like a pain to install. I know it is not the same as the CX-5 but the instructions may be helpful.

I got the factory set, and now I have some regrets. The plate doesn't extend all the way to the outboard edge of the door sill, which means the sill outside edge isn't covered which I consider to be the most vulnerable spot. Many of the ones I see on this thread have the same problem, but it looks like the eBay set in post #10 of this thread does wrap the outside sill edge.

I ended up picking these up from aliexpress [URL=http://www.aliexpress.com/item/New-Stainless-Door-Sill-Scuff-Plate-For-Mazda-CX-5-CX5-CX-5/903844569.html[/url] I let them sit in my garage for a few weeks prior to installing them due to the smell. Funny enough they still reek! As many other users have said the double sided tape is relatively useless. Instead of going the conventional route I decided to using double sided Velcro. It's surprisingly strong and this way I can take off the skid plates for regular maintenance if necessary.

Anyone worried about anything abrasive getting stuck underneath? I like the Velcro for cleaning---great idea!

nizzy1115: I like the looks of yours and especially that the sills cover the edge where I already have scuffed my paint. Sturdy enough to withstand someone stepping on them, like when waxing the car top? Thanks. Ed Hayes

That was my concern as well. The Velcro is actually surprisingly strong and great for cleaning.

Hi undergrad
I got mine from aliexpress today. Planning to install in a couple of days and yes it stinks...!!!! I am planning to do " the undergrad velcro method". One question. The longer plates are for front doors and smaller ones
are for rear doors right?

LOL. I would suggest putting them outside in the sun for a few days. It really helped diminish the smell. The longer ones go in the front and the short go in the back. :)
Cheers!

Hi guys, do these door sill plates fit the 2015's? I'm assuming they do but wanted to check to see what you year CX-5 you put them on before I order. Everything I see says 2012-2014. Thanks!

No changes whatsoever in the sheet metal between '14 and '15 models so no worries.

Mine is 2014. I think they fit 2015 too as the cars dimensions hasn't changed in 2015

After two weeks trying to put up with the smell I ripped them all out. With the sunroof open air will get sucked in through the door jambs carrying in the smell. Even after multiple wipes with pure IPA, the surrounding plastics still reek from the absorbed solvent. Try goggling benzyl chloride MSDS; excellent solvent but has no place in customer products. Returned a recliner to IKEA for the same issue (guess where it was made).

It took well over a month in my garage as well as a few days outside in the hot sun and some disinfectant spray to remove the smell from mine.
I tried putting mine in my car before the smell was gone, but I had to remove them after a day or two.

I'm thinking of getting the non-LED ones from ebay to put on my CX-5. I have plenty of chemicals that should be able to remove the smell, or at least, it's summer now so many days in the sun should work.

My question is, what 3M tape are you guys using to add to the back of these? There seems to be many options available for 3M automotive double sided tape, Is one better then the others?

Also, it looks like there is a rubber like seal on the outer edges of the door sill plates, is that correct?
