I had bought some emblem glue for my car, completely ripped my paint off of where ever I placed it. Needless to say I didn't use anymore after that.

What kind of door edge guards were they?
To protect the doors, I went to PepBoys and got the kind that goes along the edge of the door, from top to bottom, black (since it matches the car better than chrome).. So far when opening the door in the garage and bumping it into the wall, no issues. There was no glue involved in installation..
