Dash Cam

Anyone here installed a dash cam for their CX-5?
I drive around the Toronto area a lot and there are plenty of drivers who drive like they are back in India or mainland China.

I think drivers in cities such as NYC in the U.S might need one as well just for that peace of mind (boom01)

carcam central did a nice review on the blackvue on youtube. it's a bit long but very detailed and informative - unlike the typical unboxing videos or merchant videos that tell you the same thing & not how it works in the real world. lol

i'm actually waiting for version 2. they're currently working on english software & manual. among a number of changes, it's supposed to have improved heat tolerance, have a switch for parking mode, and a video output port so one can view it on an external monitor without the need of an android bluetooth-enabled device.

i like it especially because of the 1080p picture quality(reviews have been great), the low profile look and clean installation setup.

The cable running part of the installation seems similar to installing an auto-dim rear view mirror.

I just installed my dashcam yesterday. It's a generic A118 model that I got for $65 on Alibaba. The cam is great and has good resolution for the price. The most important part of the install was having an installation kit from the Dashcam store. This made it super simple to install. I started by figuring out where to install it. I ended up putting it lower than I originally intended because the plastic housing with all of the sensors behind the rearview mirror kept showing up/blocking the view to the right. With the install kit, you end up running the wiring in reverse, that is you start at the fuse box and end up at the camera. This wasn't a big problem. Started by pulling off the weather strip molding around the drivers door enough to expose the A-pillar trim and all the way down to the sill molding. Then, pulling to the right (toward the passenger side) on the top of the A-pillar molding, it pulled up about an inch or so. I did not try to remove it as I didn't want to deal with the clips (as other threads have talked about). Then I removed the kick panel trim around the fuse box area (super simple - one internal clip, one plastic nut above the dead pedal and a couple of visible clips under where the weather strip was). This also required removing the sill molding which just pulls straight up (4 clips hold it in place). I am generally nervous about breaking clips when I remove trim, but it was super simple to do all by hand and nothing broke (so don't be afraid to try it!). Looking through the windshield from outside, I was able to bend the A-pillar trim out enough to see where to put the cable. I had to fish it through at first, but that was no big deal. Ran the cable on the top part of the A-pillar so as not to interfere with the airbag in there. When I got to the top, I was able to push the cable underneath the edge of the headliner using a small piece of plastic to push it under. There is a slight opening in the headliner when you get next to the sensor box behind the rearview mirror and that is where the cable drops out. The advantage of taking off the kick panel trim is that it was easy to unscrew the bolt holding the fuse block on and put the ground strap underneath it (10 mm bolt by the way). I used the first open slot in the right side of the fuse block (closest to the dead pedal) for the install kits fuse plugin. It's labeled for the rear outlet but it was empty and it powers on and off with the engine. All of the extra cable and the transformer were all able to be stowed in the space around the fuse block and is hidden by the kick panel trim. Then you just put the trim back on and you're done. Took about 1/2 hour start to finish.

Here is the install kit I used (and HIGHLY recommend): http://thedashcamstore.com/dashcam-installation-kit-5-volt-usb-plug-low-profile-mini-fuse/

And here is the finished product. Noticeable from outside? Yes, but not so much. The cam removes quite easily in about 2 seconds if you are parking in an area where you think someone may want to steal it.

I have the same cam, well the capacitor version, A188C, and not to rain on your parade, but you could have mounted the camera MUCH higher. Most of cam that presses against the windshield can be hidden in the black dots right above it. Makes for a much cleaner install and much harder to see from outside. It won't obstruct the windshield as much either. My cam came with BLACK 3m tape, not the gray tape. If I were you I would remount it with black tape higher up.

Perhaps it should be mounted so it "looks" through the area swept by the windshield wipers for better visibility when raining.

Accidents happen at greater frequency during rain events.

The entire area with the dots is swept through by the windshield wipers. Probably has to be because of all the sensors there. I have my dash cam mounted in the same spot, but much higher as well, so the camera lens is positioned just below where the black dots start. This also keeps the camera out of my general view while driving, so I hardly ever see it there. I put a piece of black electrical tape over the blinking red dot as well to minimize it's visibility in the cabin, though that can be a problem if the camera stops recording for whatever reason.

The supplied lead I've run under the trim down into the passenger wheel well, just laid it under the carpet and connected into a 12 volt socket via an adaptor, the adaptor I've plugged into the 12 volt supply under the armrest as I use the one in the dash for my plug in voltmeter.

The camera comes with a suction pad, I had an old Garmin satnav with an unused round dash mount metal plate, this I've super glued to the black plastic radar shroud behind the rear view mirror and on the passenger side, I did try it in varying positions before finding the best location for me.

You do need to cost in a 32gb card I bought a 10 speed for around 12 on amazon.

There are various videos on utube showing how to run the cable.

With the settings I have turned off the sound, and set the video clips to 10 minutes I found this was easier to locate clips of an incident I witnessed, on 3 mins you have way to many clips., again they is a utube video showing how to do it.

+1, this.

Here is how far mine is mounted up.
