Anyone install Bodyside Moldings on a CX-5?

:
CX-5, fwd auto
Hi,

I am wondering if someone can share installation tips and photos of installed bodyside molding on their CX-5?

I have searched the internet and only sportwing has it (no Mazda factory option) little hesitant to purchase the molding.

Any suport willl be appreciated.

Thank you

Have a link to what you are looking to install?

I'm not a fan of body side molding, I thing 90's pontiacs when I hear it. But it's your car and every body has their own taste.

I ordered my side molding from Sportwing.com (I used them previously for my 07 Lex IS250 side molding too). The items came fast and the color was on point! I was impressed considering how new the Mazda was. I have the metropolitan grey, and it came as a perfect match! I followed the instructions and used a string to use as a guide. Looks great as if it were factory installed. Being that parking spaces are getting tighter and door dings erk the heck outta me...I think it was worth the $$. Some may hate the looks of it, but honestly look much better than scratches or nasty dings.

Sorry I dont know how to upload pics yet, but it looks good...kinda like the example they have their site.

Here is a photo of the side molding from Sportwing..and my lemon tree from Lowes.

It actually doesn't look too bad from that angle. Do you have anymore pictures?

Yeah,...
That actually looks pretty good!

I'm plesed to hear they were spot on with the paint.
I had to get a new rear bumper put on. The dealer had a hell of a time matching the pearl white paint. Took them several tries and they had to get a specialist to do it for them after a few days. :/

Here is couple more pics of the diff angles. Was easy to install, just make sure you read the directions first. The double stick tape is strong, once its stuck I don't think its coming off (well without chemicals or a heat gun) I simply used a tape measure, string, and tape to create my line and stuck on the mouldings one door at a time. Good luck and Free advertising for Sportwing.com I guess...lucky them.

Now if everyone's door will impact right at that spot...

I'd probably worry less if I had those on mine.

For my daily driver, I think they are almost a necessity when I park. The problem is that many vehicles have different shaped doors that they swing into us.

Wow, that is nice! It really helps further break up that big expanse of door metal and keep the vehicle from looking too tall. I may get it just for looks. Nice job on installation and finding the right line to follow.

The install instructions do a great job pointing out with measurements where to place it.

Got the body side molding installed today.
Took roughly an hour.
1 Person install

I'm a little bummed. I took a lot of pictures of how I got the measurements but corrupted the file when I was moving the pictures from the SD CARD to the computer.

I'll try to explain I suppose.
But first, PIX!!!

There is a little gap between the molding and the body of the car due to the adhesive strip. Not a great picture, but this should give you an idea.

Here is the link to the install instructions.
You'll want to print out a copy. The kit comes with one, mine however was hard to read, it looked like there was a slight paper jam or something when they made my copy.

If the link doesn't work,..

1) After I cleaned the car I used a cloth tape measure (To prevent scratching the paint with a ruler or a tape measure from your tool box)

2) I looked at the picture and estimated where the 12" and 14.5" marks were in relation to the distance from the wheel wells.
3) Use blue painters tape and placed a piece around that height from left to right.
4) Measure 12" and 14.5" and marked it on the tape
5) Place a piece of tape along the door jams so I could make the 1/8" and 1/4" marks for the ends of the molding pieces.
6) Hold the molding up using the 1/8" or 1/4" marks and figure out where the other end stops and mark that on the tape.
7) Tape a piece of string from the area you just marked, however ensure it is at the correct height and tape it to the other end.

You now have a guide to place your tape. If the string is not very tight, keep that in mind that it will slope a little. That is okay, you just want to have a straight line from one end to the other running to the two string tape points.

8) Place the tape. Keep it straight.
9) Double check your measurements. Ensure your marks, and tape are where they are supposed to be.

If your tape is in the way of where you will be placing the molding, fold it back on it's self just to the point where the molding will be placed. Blue painters tape will show a pen or pencil pretty well through the tape.

10) Clean area with the included alcohol wipes. They dried out pretty quickly. It was 93 F out during my install.
11) Apply the Pro Bond. Be careful with it. At first it seems like it's not coming out, it will. DO NOT SQUEEZE TOO HARD. I made that mistake. Thankfully I had rags near by to wipe off the paint below the area I was prepping. There isn't much. One tube per door was enough though.
12) Install the molding by removing roughly 12" of the adhesive cover strip, starting from the straight end pulling towards the front. Ensure you follow your tape line.

WARNING! The adhesive cover strip is in two pieces (see picture below.) They are taped together with a weak piece of green tape. The green tape will not hold when you remove the red tape, leaving you with a small area that may still have the adhesive still covered, meanwhile the molding is attached to the car.

13) Press firmly with a clean, soft cloth from front to back.
14) Repeat for remaining pieces.

Step back take pictures and share!

Glad to see these are available. My CX9 was like a target for door shots with those large, smooth door skins. These should certainly help.

I was too late.
During the install I saw a ding and scratch from a car door.

DOH!
