Maybe one of our Aussie bretheren can help you out by purchasing locally and shipping it?

otherwise, try contacting a JDM importer and see if they can help.

The US-Spec are much larger in size, maybe due to rewquired safety standards or something. I hopped on the Australian Mazda site, to a look at the Gallery and sure enough they were different - more sleek and sexy, plus didn't get in the way as much when folding the seats flat. User Inodes was the one who informed me of this on another thread.

Hello,

Here are some pics of the headrest, they where posted by inodes on another post.

The non US looks a lot sleeker

Happy to source prices from Mazda Australia and Mazda Japan. You might find getting them from Japan might be a little cheaper.
Other option is that your go through Mazda USA to order the headrests as a spare part. There should be distinct part numbers.

I can confirm that the headrest in Canada is the same as US :(

I will look into ordering some as well.

i'd have to agree...having tried to get my seats to fold down the other day, it wasn't quite as easy...because I still had to go over to the side and push the headrest down in order to have it flat. Would be interested in checking out how to source them and how much they are.

I can tell you that if either of the passenger's seats is all the way back in the Australian version (with the short headrests), the seats need a push to go all the way down. They just fit.
If the seats through are one notch forward, the seats can forward all the way down just by releasing the lever.

I contacted my dealership in the US and received the below response:

"I did talk to parts and did some research my self, could not find the smaller rear headrests. You can get them in different colors, just not different size. Let me see if we can find it aftermarket."

So it might be harder to acquire the Aus-Spec headrests than I thought. I can live with having the seats 1 notch forward...no problem, but having to fold them everytime? No thanks. If there aren't any aftermarket available I'm going to check if a local upholstrey shop can modify the current ones at all and find me some space.

I just noticed that the 2010 CX7 has the same kind of headrest as the European CX5 model.

I wonder if they would fit?

I might be worth to take a look. Anyone own a cx7 and 5?

I am recontacting my dealer to see if they have part numbers for the AUS/JAPAN spec rear headrests. I still want those. I called a few automotive upholstrey shops locally and for some reason they seem hesitant to do a custom job to reduce the size of the US-Spec headrests.

Unfortunately, I highly doubt they have access to any parts diagrams for non-US models.

I'd love to find a source for non-US accessories for both our Mazdas as they don't offer as many here for them.

Update - My dealership pointed me in the direction of a custom upholstery shop in the area. They are a mom n' pop shop, but do outstanding work. I went in explaining that I wanted the rear headrests pretty much reduced in size by half. This would involve removing some of the padding and cutting the metal bars down. After stitching them up like new, this would allow me to fold the seats down without removing them, plus it would still provide safety if rear-ended.

They quoted me at $125-$150 per headrest. So about $300 (USD). I left.

This might sound crazy and a little dumb, but I think I might cut the stitching myself and do the job at home. I know it won't come out looking profesional, but hey, I learned how to sew in the Navy and there's always super-glue!

I I decide to do this, I'll definitely post some pictures, unless they look like complete garbage.

and that is why not many people (especially dealerships) bother with trying to import non-US items. If someone could get the Mazda ones from another market they would likely be more than those custom ones. The stuff always sounds cool until the price with all the middlemen and import fees get involved.

Okay, I am a master seamstress and would still not take on the task your boys are talking about. Seriously!? Navy sewing! Good grief, you guys got me giggling.

I have been look for these headrests too and have called a dealership in Sydney Australia. They said that no one has EVER ordered the headrest before so they don't have part numbers for them yet. He said he would have to contact the manufacting base and see what they cost and how long it would take them to make and ship to me in Oregon, USA. Once I find out price I'll fill you in. He did say though that he couldn't guarantee that the headrests in their cars would fit into a US CX-5. Which is a good point. I don't even know if they would have the same distance and measurements. My luck...won't fit after going through all the trouble of buying them. I'll keep you posted.

Eto, here is a photo of the Mazda 6 headrests in the CX-5. As you can see they fit in the holes, but there is a gap between the seat and the headrest.

I spoke to the dealership in Austrailia and they said to order the headrests would be $140 each plus shipping. I asked him to send me a pic of the headrests so I could ensure that they are the right ones. I am still waiting on the photo. Not sure he will do it. Crossing my fingers. I am going to buy them in the black leather with red stitch. Anybody else want a set? We could go in on shipping.

Will they slide up and latch? I tried one or two different ones from other models and the posts weren't as thick so it would wobble around and one didn't have notches to hold it in place.

I went down to my local dealer a couple days ago with the part# for the blue-ish white LED DRL which is: C901-V7-160 [FL4P] <not sure you need that last bit in brackets though. They came up with nothing and claimed they couldn't order them.

This is a JDM part# and I guess Mazda doesn't allow USDM dealers to access those parts? When I owned my previous Nissan I was able to go to the local dealer and order JDM parts provided I had the correct part#.

If someone does end up pulling the trigger and orders some parts via Australia I would like to join for the LEDs if they are available there as well. They are listed at 5,740yen in case anyone is curious.

Do a search for the threads on here about LED DRL's and just order the kind in those threads. Mine were $30 and work flawlessly.

I would rather get one endorsed by mazda and will also work flawlessly. I ran aftermarket LEDs on my S14 before and ran into issues where the light would flicker from a poor connector. It took about 2 years to show signs of poor quality, but I would assume something oem would last even longer than a halogen equivalent.

Hands, yes. The poles slide up and latch. But, as the pic shows, there is a gap. That is the farthest they go down.

Why would it matter? The fact is, your car would no longer have any high beams. The legality is a moot point. Who would want to be driving on a dark, rainy highway at night and reach down to turn on the high beams only to find that someone had eliminated that functionality?

I know the CX-5 low beams are excellent but they do not negate the need for high beams at higher speeds. It's like asking if it's illegal to remove 5th and sixth gears.

Who would want to do that (and what would be the advantage)?

You are totally incorrect. They both have Grand Tourings with Tech. For those who have the tech package, the DRL only function as DRL's. The HID's have high and low built into them. You lose nothing by switching out the halogen bulb to an LED. This has been discussed and proven many times before. The only issue is if you have a non-tech car, which doesn't apply to these two guys.

Okay all,

I know it's been a little longer than I thought (5 months total), but here's what you have all been waiting for! I finally got my Euro-style headrests from Sydney, Australia. I have to thank Chris Kay from their Service & Parts department for working with me and shipping to Oregon, USA for me. In total I spent about $350 for two headrest and shipping. I don't think that's bad at all. I've posted some pics for you to see and please excuse the mess in my car. I'm not gonna lie, I'm a mom of a very "spicy" little girl. I'm so excited about these headrests. It almost makes me want to clean the car! I'm not great at forums, but if you click on the images you can read the blurbs I wrote about each one. If you're interested. Thanks for looking!

When I ordered mine they were not in stock. The Japanese factory had to make them and ship them to the dealership in Austrailia. They said that no one has needed these parts yet so mine were the first ones made for individual sale. Just FYI. You might want to preorder them and have MIL pick them up. Save you $80 in shipping.

Found it! Part number is: KD51-88-24002

Remember this is for the black with red stitching. Also, please don't overlook the fact that the factory DOES NOT have these in stock. They have to be made to order. So it takes a few months to get them made. I'm not sure why. That is just what I was told by service.

Hope this helps. Would be awesome if you could get them in the US dealerships. My dealers told me they aren't legal here so he couldn't order them. Awesome that yours is so cool!

In my opinion, we should try other cars headrest which are black. The 2009 Honda CRV it's perfect, my wife's car and I have tried it. The only thing is, that is gray. Somebody, should try out the Mazda 6's headrest.

This is a pic of the Mazda 6 headrests. The metal posts fit, but there is a two inch gap between the headrests lowest setting and the seat. See pic

Went to the dealer and tried the Mazda 3 headrest and while not perfect it's pretty good, hard to say if it's better than the Mazda 6 one from the pic above or the same. The only issue, the posts seem to be a touch thicker and when trying to take it out the dealer thought we wouldn't be able to, I had to help him pull it out. He didn't have pricing yet.

Much nicer than the U.S. spec rear headrest. Unfortunately in Mexico, we also get the U.S. spec ones. They do block the view so much more than the non-U.S. ones.

It looks just like the non-us spec CX-5 headrest. If it fits we would be all set.

Obviously the biggest problem is shipping cost. (sadbanana)

Maybe I can set up a group buy, so it'd cut back the shipping cost. I don't know the exact cost yet but hopefully not an arm & a leg. :D Also, tell me how much $ would you spend on these head rest.

Who'd be interested? ;)

I, too, would be interested in joining the group buy (subject to price, of course); however, with me being in Canada, I don't know if it would complicate matters too much. Although, if you were willing, I think that it would just be a matter of putting the headrests in a box and shipping them off to me; pretty much the same thing you would have to do for the out of state members of the group. Please let me know.

By the way, I would be looking for the black leather with red accent stitching, as seen in post #46 of this thread.

Thanks

I would be interested too if it's not much more than just picking up the 3 headrest locally. Twsmith79 said it was around 350$ to her, and if everything is shipping to you then you have to ship to us add another almost 50$ to Canada plus duties. I think the 3 headrest is in the ballpark of 200$ so if it's close to 400$ it would be too much for me. Also mine is black cloth.

In Japan, only black (leather & cloth) seats are currently offered. They DO have 2013 Anniversary (http://www.cx-5.mazda.co.jp/13-anniversary/) edition which comes w/ black & off white (not sand) seats. (wow)

So is the top one the leather and the bottom the cloth? I take it the bottom cloth ones are superfluous. Did you just have a friend receive them in Japan for you and then he/she shipped it to you in SF? I have a lot of friends in Japan if that's the right part number for the leather ones. I'm wondering if it is cheaper to get it in Japan or in the UK the next time I'm there (exchange rates and all but also inventory.)

Proof? NA Mazda decided to change the rear headrests design but the rest of the world are using them. Lots of new cars rear headrests have the same design... even Mazda3 & Mazda6. We'll never know the REAL reason why NA Mazda changed the design. Btw, US version rear headrests are so BIG they are blocking the rear view... that's what I call unsafe. (rolleyes)

I don't have a CX-5 (yet), but the Non-NA headrests seem to be the same profile as the center rear headrest. I would think that the anti-whiplash protection would be the same across the back seats.

New regulations in USA require specific head rest support design. All OEMs are forced into this. I learned this while I was researching my new car. For example, the Chevy Equinox headrests are designed to sit slightly more forward as a result. Hard to notice the change because their original design looked similar to the new one. Anyway, for proof walk into a knowledgeable car dealer and ask them.

Sadly a US car dealership is last place to get factual and accurate information, usually they are a source of misinformation.

Severe whiplash injuries are best avoided, because the pain can last for years after the accident. I'm not finding any visibility problems from headrests.

The Volvo rear headrest is the best solution for those that want to flip them down when seat is vacant. They fold down and forward so that nobody sits in that spot when down.

In the US, there appears to be some interesting rules about REAR headrests. They aren't required to exist at all, but if they DO exist, then they need to be at least 3 inches in height (750mm to be exact.) Source: http://www.nhtsa.gov/cars/rules/rulings/HeadRest/update/202FinalRule.html

Edit: In relation to rear headrests, the linked rules contain "requirements for head restraints voluntarily installed in rear outboard designated seating positions." To me, that means there are no rules for non-outboard (middle seat) headrests.

I found a supplier for these in the UK. Bourne Road Garage Mazda.

http://shop.crayford-mazda.co.uk/category/Mazda_CX_5,b.html

You can simply email off the site or call. You want to ask for Andrew Fisher. He is great. The headsets take about 4 weeks to arrive in the UK from Japan (they are not in stock in the UK) and then about 4-7 days more via UPS to the good ole USA.

I ordered two sets, one for me and one for a friend, and the total shipped to my home was about $405. Not bad at all - $202.50 for a set. Obviously if you purchase one set the cost will be a bit higher as you have to pay the full shipping fee alone.

The headrests sell for 54.29 GBP each (108.58 GBP for two) plus shipping (I'm assuming prices can always change so do inquire). In my case the shipping was 39.50 GBP. Part numer- KD5188240A02 (black leather GT).

My CX-5 is Black leather but they can get them in any color that the CX-5 is offered in the UK (cloth or leather). Just look at the options on the UK Mazda site. I remember the 'white' leather was an option.

I wanted to wait and see how things went before I posted. They just arrived today and fit perfectly.

Be sure to tell him Michael H from the USA referred you when you contact him so he will know exactly what is going on.

Would like to get the non-US Spec rear head restraints for my US-Spec CX-5 and don't know how to get them. Any ideas?

And now for the Canadian experience. I went the Australia route, contacting John Newell Mazda for the purchase and shipment of a pair of sand leather rear restraints. I placed the order in late November. It took until March 20 for them to arrive in Australia from Japan, but I was out of country and did not confirm shipping arrangements until March 25. They were shipped April 08 and arrived here April 17.

The cost? MasterCard billed 337.19 which is the converted to Canadian dollars plus exchange fee of the vendor bill for the materials and shipping. Added to that and due on delivery was (all Canadian dollars) 9.95$ handling fee, 19.71$ duty, and sales taxes of 45.26$ for a total cost of ownership of 412.11$.

I think the above clearly supports the concept that a fool and his money are always welcome.

FYI, Mazda dealers in Japan don't keep these headrests in stock either. They'll make them as soon as orders are placed, & that's why it'd take 3-4 weeks to be shipped. I'll let you guys know when I receive them. (wink)

Great, I can't wait! Thanks

Yes. A few people have tried the head rests from the 3 and 6. The posts are too long and won't allow them to go all the way down. I suppose the posts could be cut down a little and it might let them go down.

Love them! So nice to have an unobstructed view through the back glass.
Fendyman. Do you by chance own stock in a packing tape company? I had one hell of a time getting the box open with a key. Just kidding, nice packing job. TBH just plain fast I didn't expect them until tomorrow at the earliest.
A word of caution for any of you with little ones that are thinking about getting these. Those with forward facing car seats will have to run the rear anchor strap over the headrest. It made my sons seat a little wonky. Nothing serious by any means I just wanted to give a heads up.
My wife will love them for sure.

Leaving the US headrests off was what I did too, but I had to store them in a bag on the passenger floor or in the trunk, which makes for more clutter. This solution not only frees up my clutter, but looks better at the same time IMO. To quote Fendyman- "it's JDM yo! (rei)"

Do you know that the seat covers are intended for seats with airbags in them? Bad things can happen to you if you have a seat cover that won't let the airbag deploy properly, should the situation ever arise. And if North Carolina has vehicle inspection, they may get forcibly removed.

Edit: And then I looked at the description on ebay... they are, indeed, airbag-compatible. Still, the precaution about state inspection stands. If the person doing the inspection wants to be a jackass, they're going to be a jackass.

My Non-US Spec rear head restraints arrived today for my 2015 CX-5 GT w/tech. They fit perfect , look great , and give a finished touch to the back seats without impairing the drivers vision out the rearview mirror. I purchased mine from Fendyman and the transaction was smooth and professional with Lightning Fast shipping , I sent payment Wednesday evening and the head restraints , being shipped from the west coast , arrived this morning at my house south of Boston , that's three days total transaction time from start to finish! If you are on the fence about ordering these I would highly recommend that you do and I would also recommend doing business with Fendyman. I will post a few pics.

You can simply email off the site or call. You want to ask for Andrew Fisher. He is great. The headsets take about 4 weeks to arrive in the UK from Japan (they are not in stock in the UK) and then about 4-7 days more via UPS to the good ole USA."

They came in the mail today and WOW... what a huge (and I mean HUGE) difference in being able to see out the rear window! Money well spent IMHO. I'm sure it's all about "safety" (government regulations), but I don't see why the U.S. spec CX-5's couldn't have come with these low profile headrests.

Anyone have a need for the black leather U.S. version of the headrests (left & right sides) I removed from my car? I'd hate to just toss them into the trash but I have no need for them. I'm tempted to cut them up just to see how they're made. :)

I 100% agree. The new synthetics are nothing like yesteryear's pleather. Synthetics don't dry out like real leather. And like you said, maintenance involves a lot less elbow grease.

I have tried my wife's 2009 Honda CRV headrest and it fits perfectly. The only problem is, that it's gray. I don't think these CRVs come with black interior.

Tibimakai,
When you say the CRV headrest fits "perfectly" do you mean the rods slide in easily, and there is no gap between the headrest and the seat (like the Mazda 6 headrest has)?

If it does fit perfectly, I believe you can get it in black. Here is a link to a schematic diagram and parts list for the 2009 CRV (EX model) rear seat:
http://www.hondapartsnow.com/interior_bumper/b__41~2009~honda~cr-v~5dr_ex_2wd~5at~ka~rear~seat.html

The two side rear headrests are number 8 on the diagram, and if you look down the list of parts for number 8, the colors listed are ATLAS GRAY, INDIGO BLACK, and PEARL IVORY.

I did a search by part # and came up with this link (http://torontohondaparts.com/(A(_EVoqk0SzgEkAAAANWYwMDNkMjEtMWQxMi00NDE1LWIwNzM tNzgxYzRkZDE2MjRherwHHC5K2upfCBKEpP-grzEaqnk1))/Honda/CR-V/2011/5door/EX_(4WD)/interiorbumper/REAR_SEAT/8718/HEADREST_ASSY.,_RR._*NH642L*(INDIGO_BLACK)/82140-SXT-A11ZB?AspxAutoDetectCookieSupport=1)from Toronto Honda Parts (I am in Canada). The price is $56.84 for one headrest. If these actually fit perfectly, it is a much cheaper way to go than ordering the Mazda ones from Japan.

This price is for cloth, though. I checked prices for the EX model CRV, since I have cloth interior in my CX-5. If you have leather, part numbers for leather seats are here (http://www.hondapartsnow.com/Page_Product/PartDetail.aspx?catalogID=76&productID=7&yearID=40&doorID=3&gradeID=526&areaID=2&transmissionID=7&originID=-1&colorLabelIDs=-1&colorLabelID=-1&sectionID=7&idAndImageID=14802 1485623).

What I'm really asking is if you can verify the CRV ones really do fit perfectly before anyone here (me) tries to order them. If you had the opportunity to take pictures of your CRV headrests in the CX-5, that would be fantastic (not that I'm trying to be too demanding or anything! I understand if it's a pain in the a--).

Thanks!

I will check later on, sorry about the delay, I have forgot about this. I had an accident and other stuff. To California, it would be $145.xx shipped. Not bad. Everywhere else in US, they are much more expensive.(part # 82140-SXT-A11ZB black)

I believe that the 2014 Mazda 6 headrest fits better and it's cheaper too.

$35.94 black cloth.
Here is a picture, I have asked a sales person, if we can switch them out to try it out, if it would fit.

208722WOW-thos are only $36/ea for the cloth. And they appear to fit much better than the Honda ones. Seems like a no-brainer. I will check them out next time I'm near a dealer.

That's awesome! Not as awesome as JDM ones but close enough... a bit shorter from JDM ones. I can't tell from your pic... does it have red stitching as well?

Btw, I just received another shipment of black leather JDM rear headrests from Japan yesterday but they are all gone shipped this AM... except for 1 set which isn't paid for yet. (shocked)
PM me if you are interested. ;)

I placed an order with Quality Mazda this morning for a set of black M6 cloth rear headrests. They are backordered from Mazda and they have no idea when they will get them in. I told them to let the order stand and see what happens. BTW: there is no part number available for the rears on an M3, but from what I could tell at the dealership yesterday where I tried one from an M6 on (the fit was good enough that I felt OK with using them-especially for a total price of $85, incl. shipping), they are all the same.

It may have had red stitching, it was a while since I took that picture. We have just grabbed from one M6 a headrest.
Paris, did you try the M3 one too?
If I remember well, with the M6 there is a slight gap between the backrest and headrest, but I think that it is a bit better than the CRV, no? The CRV has a gap also.

@Fendyman, package arrived and the headrests are great. Two things which amazed me:

1. That you were able to package them in so small of a box.

2. The view out of my rear windows without huge headrest obstructions.

Thanks
Gary

I got the "premium" black cloth headrests from Fendyman, and uploading a pic just because I don't think anyone has of this version. I had originally tried the headrests from the 3 (and posted pics earlier in this thread), but with the gap I really preferred to get something with the proper fit even though those were quite close.

How much gap is there with the oem headrest?

trucx
09-19-2014, 11:21 PM
There's no gap between the seatback and the headrest, and the gap on the top of the seat is basically the thickness of the plastic ring that the poles slide into, so I guess about 1/8". With the 3 headrest it was probably a little over 1/4" maybe 1/2" all around, but it's been a while since I tried it out, so can't fully remember.

Any chance one of your CX5 guys could measure the distance between the posts? My CX9 has THREE rows of those giant headrests i have to try to see over, And would love if these were an option for me also. As long as the spacing is the same, i can mod them to fit even if they stuck up and such. Its just the spacing that really matters to me.

No gap here

AKA JDM perfection. ;)

trucx
09-20-2014, 03:37 PM
I guess I'm a perfectionist, but the gap bothered me, and also from the pictures I had seen I thought the JDM ones looked better regardless of the gap. If it was 500$ vs. 100$ I wouldn't have bothered with the JDM, but in the end the price wasn't a big enough factor to make me just settle for the cheaper one. I do agree though, if you're looking to save the money the other headrests really aren't that bad and a stranger getting in your car probably won't notice the gap.

The US market 3/6 headrests may actually be a bit more comfortable than the JDM units for rear seat passengers. In my brief test fitting, I noticed that they seemed to fit well at the base of the skull when raised to that point. I think this may be the result of their slight forward bias (caused by "the gap"). Probably not a big difference, but maybe a slight advantage to offset the fact that they do not fit as well as JDM.

A quick post of praise to Fendy who (if I'm not mistaken) has now organized 3 orders of these for us neglected Americans. I received mine so fast after paying the invoice I have to wonder if he even waited for the funds to hit his account before he shipped them. Couldn't be happier! Thanks so much!

^ooops... almost forgot I have a set of sand Sport, too. Due to not many interest from Sport model owner, I will let THIS set go for $200 shipped. ;)

The difference between the Sport & Touring is pretty much the gold stitching (on Touring):

Fendyman, thanks for the courteous service and speedy shipping - I would have got the headrests Saturday except the local mail person just threw the "attempt to deliver" card in our box, didn't even come up the driveway.

Perfect color match and they really open up the interior! Thanks again.
