centric rotor prep and bedding in?

Hey. Just bought centric premium front and rear rotors and 'Posi Quiet' ceramic pads for my 08 GT. I know I need to remove oil/grease from the discs before I mount them...do I need to do anything else? The rotors say "installation ready finish." Does this mean I do not need to rough em up with sandpaper before before mounting them?

In addition, the pads say "scorched-no break in required." Does this mean I can skip "bedding" them in?

Thanks!

PS Got a great deal on em from "RockAuto." 374.00 for everything/shipping included. Arrived in 2 days from WI to NJ..standard shipping.

All you need to do is get a couple of cans of break cleaner and spray away. Spray some on 1/3 of the rotor at a time and wipe. Do this until you feel like you have removed all of the grease. Oh and use some latex gloves. This will save your hands from the brake cleaner and also keep your hand oils off of the rotors. I recommend putting a bin under where you spray to catch drips. I am not an enviromental freak, but I sure don't like dripping poisons in my dirt.

As far a the rotors go, they are already cross-cut and do not need to be roughed up. Carefully inspect your rotors to ensure they were not dropped duting shipping. I had a dropped rotor and did not catch it until I had installed it. Fortunately Tirerack went good for it. IMHO the pads do not need to be bedded, but because I am old school, I like to follow a light break-in period for the first 1.5K miles and avoid sudden stops. (not necessarily the case anymore with today's pads)

I think the hardest time you will have is removing the screws that hold the rotors on during factory install. If you do not have an impact wrench, get a philips head screwdriver with a very large head. If not you risk rounding out the head and have to drill and extract like I did.

Thanks. Thats good advice. Im interested in your 'mild' 'break in' approach. In researching it, ive found some sites that reccommend drastic "60-40mph stops six-times consecutively." What's behind the different philosophies?

From another website: All brake pads must be bedded-in with the rotor they will be used against to maximize brake performance. Recommended bed-in procedures for newly installed brake pads and rotors are as follows:

AKEBONO

400 to 500 miles of moderate driving is recommended. Consumer should avoid heavy braking during this period.

BAER

See SBS procedure below.

BREMBO Gran Turismo

In a safe area, apply brakes moderately from 60mph to 30mph and then drive approximately 1⁄2 mile to allow the brakes to cool. Repeat this procedure approximately 30 times.

EBC

400 to 500 miles of moderate driving is recommended. Consumer should avoid heavy braking during this period.

NOTE: If a higher than normal amount of brake dust or excessive pad squeal from EBC pads and rotors is experienced, they may be glazed. Remove this glazing by decelerating aggressively from 60mph to 20mph in a safe area. This should be repeated 3 times. Then allow the brakes to cool by driving normally.

HAWK

After installing new pads make 6 to 10 stops from approximately 35 mph with moderate pressure. Make an additional two to three hard stops from approximately 40 to 45 mph. Do not allow the vehicle to come to a complete stop.

NOTE: Hawk racing pads (Blue, Black, HT-10, HT-12) may require a different bed-in procedure. Contact your sales specialists at The Tire Rack for racing application information.

KAZERA

Follow the brake pad manufacturers recommended break-in procedure taking care not to produce excessive heat in the system. Avoid heavy braking for the first 400-500 miles.

POWER SLOT

Follow the brake pad manufacturers recommended break-in procedure taking care not to produce excessive heat in the system. Avoid heavy braking for the first 400-500 miles.

SATISFIED

For Gransport GS6 Carbon Ceramic Pads —

Step 1: Make 10 stops from 30 mph (50 kph) down to about 10 mph (15 kph) using moderate braking pressure and allowing approximately 30 seconds between stops for cooling. Do not drag your pads during these stops. After the 10th stop, allow 15 minutes for your braking system to cool down.

Step 2: Make 5 consecutive stops from 50 mph (80 kph) down to 10 mph (15 kph). After the 5th stop, allow your braking system to cool for approximately 30 minutes. This completes the break-in of your pads to the rotor surface.

During Steps 1 & 2, a de-gassing process occurs which may produce an odor coming from your pads as they complete the break-in cycle. This odor is normal and is part of the process your pads must go through to achieve their ultimate level of performance. The odor will go away after allowing your braking system to cool for approximately 30 minutes.

As with any new set of pads, do not tow a trailer or do any hauling during the break-in period.

Full seating of your new brake pads normally occurs within 1,000 miles.

For all other Satisfied pads —

400 to 500 miles of moderate driving is recommended. Consumer should avoid heavy braking during this period.

SBS

400 to 500 miles of moderate driving is recommended. Consumer should avoid heavy braking during this period.

IMHO I think it has to do with brake pad composition

Im embarassed to say that Ive installed a lot of pads over the years and never paid much attention to bedding in. In addition, I dont recall any documentation with any pads Ive purchased that address it. Clearly, its an important part of the process...thanks for your help!

Don't be emarassed bro. Pads never come with documentation. I just know from listening to my old man and uncles. Let us know how it all goes. I'd offer to help, but I am sure you are not in my neck of the woods.
