How to remove the shift knob

Hi guys and gals.
just took delivery of a 2010 CX-9 GT, got all the bells and whistles. I am in the process of installing the ipod integration module. The shift knob is in the way, I turned and released the chrom locking ring at the bottom of the knob. It appears that I just have to pull it out. But it is in tight, I give it a hard tuck but was not successful in pulling it out. Just wanted to confirm if this is the correct way to remove the shift knob. Thanks.

The whole knob unscrews. Sounds like you forced the chrome ring off of the knob, which are glued together, instead.

While you are correct that the knob is threaded on. The bottom ring can be unscrewed. I am not sure what purpose it serves though. see picture.

I figured the ring threads had threadlock on them.

The bottom chrome ring is plastic, no reason to use locktite.
