How to remove the indicator panel around the console shifter

So I've got a little plastic "rattle-squeak" from the plastic indicator at the base of the transmission shifter. The "manual" I am using right now says to pull the rubber mat pocket out by sliding it forward and out. Then to lift the indicator panel up (popping it loose from its clips).

1. I can't get the rubber pocket out (just under the radio). Won't budge. Which way is "forward" ? The front of the car or towards the shift handle?

2. Does the indicator really just pop up? Seems pretty tight in there. Any danger of breakage?

Any alternate/different ways of doing this are welcomed.

Thanks. That IS way more involved. I better try some of the non-intrusive methods first. Greases are risky because they can smell, stain, and dry out. I am going to seek a soft foam or sticky putty solution. I will post up if I discover a clever way of resolving the problem.
