Will 40mm offset work on 17" rims? - will it clear calipers?

Will 40mm offset wheels fit on the Mazda5?
(I've got an '06, but shouldn't matter).

OE is 52mm, seen a lot of 45mm on Tirerack, but no 40mm...
Got a deal available on 40mm rims, look nice and all, not sure what problems I could be setting myself up for.

What offset really means...

Ok,

For all who are wondering, I had it backwards.
Read a little more, and offset is how far you push the wheel in 'insertion depth' from half way to make contact with the hub...

So the 40mm will stick out further than OE at 52mm, not go in further.
Just an FYI for others doing goofy things like trying to buy 'generic' aftermarket rims and make them work.
