Anyone go larger on stock rims?

I'm wondering if a 225/50R17 will fit in the stock wells without rubbing. I want to put more tire to the road.

Yes I know they will be taller, but it's only about a 3% difference from stock (about 2.5mph diff at 80mph) so I'm not concerned about speedo error.

The other option that might be too wide, is a 235/45R17 (about 1% difference in height).

I actually like the idea of a taller tire anyways for
1) More rim protection from potholes
2) "Lowered look" by filling the wheel wells, but without losing ground clearance.

Please let me know if you have successfully tried a larger width and height on stock rims. Thanks.

Why don't you go with 225/45R17 ?? .4% of difference , you have de look of a widder tire and still don't feel much of road bumps... I'm actually running on 215/45R18 (RX8 wheels) and it's really good.

I run 215/50R17 snow tires in the winter and 225/45R17 summer tires the rest of the year, both on the stock wheels. The 215/50's are pretty tall, but don't rub. I'd be supprised if a 225/50 cleared without some rubbing.

EPcivic,

So that extra half inch of radius (225/50 vs. 225/45) might rub? How about a 235/45? Think I can squeeze the extra 5mm on each side compared to yours?
