Anyone "downgraded" to 16's?

I live in an older house. My driveway was designed for Model T's (long, very narrow, high incline, w/ high curbs). So, the curb rash on my rims has become very irritating.

I've been debating on swapping out (and selling) my 17" wheels/tires for some bargain Kumhos on 16" steelies from tirerack.

Anyone else done the same for their non-Winter tires? Just curious.

there wasnt clearance issues with 15"s? I thought out brakes only fitted in 16s =p

Yup, you are right, OEM 15s have a smaller brake disc and are only available in Europe and Japan I believe (scratch). I think they did not make it here as they did not pass the decent look test (poke), LOL

Rear disc diameter (mm):
- 15" brake 278
- 16"-17" brake 300

prob for the 1.8 and 2.0Ls

downgrade? what ya mean? i have 16s stock =p wonder how much they sell....

Good question. I guess $350?

Anyone have center caps for their steelies? I'm thinking of these B2300 ones, if they fit -

Me

I put on a set of Mazda3 16s last fall with new Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S tires. I don't miss the 17s.

Nice looking wheels. I put the steelies and REVO1's on a few weeks back. As snow tires go, they are surprisingly sporty.

hi. which one will be better for a winter tire. 205/55/R16 or 205/60/R16?

Recommended for MZ5 is 205/55/R16. But if you compute the diameter, it will be a bit smaller than the MZ5 standard tire of 205/50/R-17. Shouldn't winter tire be taller?

My winter tire and steel is then hankook ipike from dealer.

the taller one will yield you a better ride, more surface contact, more rotating mass, and less tqyness... so it may be better for trudging through snow and less wheel spin from the start... but it may affect braking.... granted we're talking very small differences, but under a microscope thats what I'd hypothesize.

Winter Tires

I just replaced my '08 MZ3 P205/50R17 tires with P205/55R16 on '07 MZ5 16" alloys for winter.
They look and handle great - so far ! (cool)

Either size would be exceptable - within 3% of the original 17" tire to maintain braking and handling characteristics, but the P205/55R16 (0.8%) matches your original P205/55R17 tire closer, than the P205/60R16 (2.38%).

thanks for the link... the dealer installed winter tire (205/55/R16) is smaller in diameter than the Mz5's 205/55/R17. Meaning with my winter tire the car rides lower...

I'll go for fo the 205/60/R16 on my next winter tire... lol. Maybe 2 more winters from now. And I guess I'll be stuck with the original Toyo Proxies for a while..
