Anybody know why on the CX-7 the manual selection notch on the shifter is to the left - toward the driver?

On my old Mazda6 it was to the right (toward the passenger side).

Anybody know why Mazda switched? Or was it just an arbitrary thing?

I'm catching hell trying to re-educate my right hand.

It's towards the left on my Mazda 5 and Mazda 3. It sounds like the Mazda6 is the odd one out

Exactly. This is because the 3, 5, and CX-7 are 95% Japanese, where as the Mazda 6 is less. That's the only thing I can figure.

Design decision.

The Mazda6 and Mazda2 (which isn't available in N. America) were respectively the first and second new-gen Mazdas and both have the manual-mode outwards (away from the driver).

With the third new-gen Mazda, the RX-8, and onwards, the manual-mode was switched to move inwards (towards the driver). Reason being to be closer to the driver.

All this applies to both left and right-hand steering positions (i.e. applies globally).
