New Custom PC Build - Tips?

So I'm thinking about building a new PC, but it's been a while since I did, and it seems like there's some new technology and things to learn. So could anyone give me some tips/suggestions on the below list (i.e., whether anything is blatantly incompatible, etc). This would be used primarily for gaming.

Thanks for the advice. Only thing about the monitor is that I don't want a widescreen because I don't want the image to be stretched...what should I look for in a gaming monitor? Also does anyone know of a good, quiet CPU cooler? Trying not to make this setup too loud.
 
What is your budget?

I use a NEC 2080UX+ 4:3 monotor and a Samsung 2443EW 16:9 monitor on my setup. The older 20" 4:3 is probably the best monitor I've ever had. It has worse specs than the newer Samsung that has very good specs on paper, but the NEC specs are true and the picture quality and definitely the color balance is not even comparable. The newer version of this 20" 4:3 is the 2090UX, the problem with NEC though is that it is a professional monitor, meaning it's expensive.
I would definitely go with a 20" though since it has higher resolution than the 19" monitors.

If this is for gaming I would definitely change the CPU to intel Core i7 which also uses DDR3 RAM.

Cordless technology is much better now then a few years back, but I would still say that it is full speed USB for gaming, Logitec G15 or G19 are sweet.

If you got the money for it a 10000RPM Velociraptor would be a good idea, definitely decreases loading time during games.

I use a Zalmann heatpipe style CPU fan with 92mm fan myself.

And +1 on the SATA DVD burner

there is no stretching with a widescreen monitor. Set the game's resolution to the screen native resolution. There is more viewing space. You definately want a widescreen monitor for gaming.

That is probably the funniest thing I have ever heard related to PC monitors.

Do you guys think the 850-watt power supply is necessary?
 
he's just saying that the with the widescreen, it won't stretch the image, you'll just see more of it, the size of the image... that's what changing your resolution is for.

...get duel screen!

LOL true...don't hear much humor in the monitor chatter these days.

But yeah the widescreen won't stretch it. For example if you are viewing this site on a widescreen you will just have a lot of extra space on the sides. On my 23" monitor I can view 2 word documents maximized side by side.

Widescreen works GREAT for games as it gives you a much larger viewing area, so for FPS or RTS games, or even like WoW you have a much better experience.
 
Thanks again for the advice. Here is take two. Still haven't decided on a mouse. Also need to find a quiet CPU fan and possibly power supply. I honestly want the appearance and noise level of this computer to be on the low end of the dork scale. I wonder if it's possible to get the G5 in a plain color?

Also I wonder if I could get by with a cheaper motherboard...
