So I did some checking into my ticket that I got in KS. The fine is for $105. I checked the KS statutes and found 8-2118 and the fine listed for 10 over the speed limit should be $30. $75 shy of what is listed on the back on my ticket. In the "other violations" section on the ticket is printed "RAD. DET.", which I can only assume means radar detector. Below that is listed what looks like 8-1538 (his chicken scratch is tough to make out). As you can see from the above link, this section deals with soliciting rides or business from a roadway. WTF?!?!? How does that have anything to do with a radar detector? And even still, the fine listed for this offense is only $30.
So I'm seriously thinking about showing up in Hays, KS on December 16th at 10:00am to fight this. It's a tuesday, so I'll have to take the day off work- no big deal really. But I figure it will cost me about $45 in gas to drive out there and back. Even if the judge sticks me with the original $30 speeding fine, I'm out about $75 on the day. Sure, I only save $30 overall, but it just irritates me that it appears that this cock sucker is trying to get more money out of me than he should- probably because I had out-of-state plates on my car and figures I won't show up to fight it.
