An official emissions certification document registered by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has revealed that Mitsubishis recently revealed Lancer Sportback will be arriving in the United States, with two performance models set to be on offer upon its debut next year. The models are the high-performance Lancer Sportback Ralliart and the tamer GTS.

Like the sedan, the new Sportback Ralliart packs a 237hp (177kW) 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder - a detuned version of the same 4B11 found in the Evo X and is available with either a five-speed manual or the trick TC-SST dual-clutch gearbox. The car also comes with an active center differential, standard AWD, and twin-piston front brake calipers. According to the EPA its fuel-economy is rated at 17mpg in the city and 25mpg on the highway.

The Lancer Sportback GTS, meanwhile, will feature the same specification as the sedan version already on sale, which means it will arrive with a naturally aspirated 2.4L four-cylinder engine with either a five-speed manual or six-speed CVT with pseudo manual tiptronic mode, reports Edmunds. The manual GTS is rated at 20mpg in the city and 27mpg on the highway, while the CVT is rated at 21mpg in the city and 27mpg on the highway.

The Sportback models offer an auto-folding function for the seats that increases luggage compartment via an adjustable rear floor. The vehicle is 4,585mm long (the sedan is 4,570mm) and offers 288 to 344 liters of space with the rear seats up and expands to 1,394L when the seats are folded.

Pricing should be slightly higher than the sedan, which in Ralliart trim starts from $26,490 and in GTS trim starts from $19,190.

ehh i feel like the roof line should go further back to cover more of the rear like a p5, but that might just be the p5 owner in me.

Yeah, and the rear should be shorter behind the wheels. Something's not quite right about those proportions.

Still, not bad.

agreed with it needing more room behind the rear pillar, something like teh windows on the Pro5 in the rear.

It is sexy none the less!

It looks like they flush mounted the rear end of a toyota matrix to a lancer. Fugly

Officially Official: 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback on sale in U.S. this summer

Mitsubishi finally announced what we've known all along: the five-door Lancer Sportback is coming to the States for the 2010 model year and sales will begin this summer.

The 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback builds on the already competent Lancer sedan, although the overall length is slightly longer to accommodate the new hatch. One-touch auto-folding rear seats split 60:40 to make room for "active lifestyle" parcels and Mitsubishi dropped the rear cargo area floor by three inches to create 52.7 cubic-feet of space when the rear thrones are folded flat.

The Sportback will be available in two trims, beginning in GTS form and equipped with Mitsubishi's 168 hp, 2.4-liter inline four mated to either a five-speed manual or CVT with six "virtual" ratios. More importantly, the Sportback will be offered in Ralliart guise, with the detuned Evolution X's turbocharged 4B11 2.0-liter four putting out 237 hp and 253 lb.-ft. of torque. Power will be doled out to all four wheels through Mitsubishi's All-Wheel Control (AWC) system with Active Center Differential (ACD), and buyers can opt for either the six-speed Twin Clutch-Sportronic Shift transmission (TC-SST) or CVT gearbox, both of which are manipulated by a set of magnesium-alloy paddle shifters.

Pricing hasn't been announced yet, but once all the options boxes are ticked on the Ralliart, expect the price to still be under $30k.

You see it coming from the front and think, "Sweet EVO!". Then it makes a turn and your jaw drops and say, "WTF happened to the rear end?"
