28,500 miles and rear brakes already need to be replaced? 2019 CX-9

:
2019 CX-9 Grand Touring AWD
Just had the CX9 at the dealer to have them look at the cracks in my infotainment system screen. While there they pointed out that the rear brakes only have 3mm left and the fronts only have 5mm left. The car is a 2019 but only has 28,500 miles on it. I do 95% city driving but we've never had a car where brake pads failed so soon. I realize there's a lot of factors that could play a role in brake wear but this seems a little excessive. Based on 50 years of family car ownership, 40K was on the low end, and 80K was on the high end. Even searching here I've seen sub 40K break wear posts but never anything as low as this.

Yep, that's not much mileage for brake pads but, as you stated, lots of factors can contribute. We have 35k on our 2020, just had annual PA inspection, and have 7 and 9 left. Very little city or stop and go commute driving.

Hi eveyone. You might have seen my post already. Since we talked about rear brakes, I decided to copy post here too.

So mine is mostly highway. So it might be the same. The back set is looks 30% smaller. There are a few articles on why suv rear wear out faster.

Tossing my data in cx 9 2016 at 105k. 80% highway drive. From 2019 to 2022 I added 70k miles. I also own a cx 5 2014. Purchased the cx 9 GT 2016 in 2019 used with 28k miles and possibly zero oil change...

First set of OEM Front lasted to 51k, I replaced it a bit early. Since I already removed everything and brake was cheap. I was lazy and left the rear for another day.

At 76k usage I replaced the back set, it was about time. Wagner OEX

The the good at 105k, (52k usage) front look amazing. I don't have a those tools to measure.. But I use two of those 1 gallon paint sticks. That gives you an good idea on how new it is. I'll show you the same on my unused one.

Back looks horrible, I heard some sounds and decided to remove / add new brake grease. It was worn down at 28k usage...

I had a lot of rust dust / brake dust. It clogged piston a bit ( I had to tear it because I over extended it...).

I attach a few pictures.
1) Current Front Wagner OEX at 52k usage
2) picture of new front unused Raybestos eht1258H with the paint stick 👌
3) New rear raybestos eht1934H
4) Old rear Wagner 28k miles
5) The build up of the dust powdered on the pad

PS) My rear Wagner for Cx 5 didn't last as long to. I think about 35k and was metal (6) main issue was the brake caliper not releasing and destroy my break rotor and pad. There was a bit of life on it. Maybe 5-7k more. If everything had no issues. But it 100% wear out faster then OEM

Ty for all those mazda user that spend time post and document

Hi eveyone. You might have seen my post already. Since we talked about rear brakes, I decided to copy post here too.......

Thanks for the write up! Guess given the city miles on my car this sounds about right then.

Love my cx and I do go zoom zoom a lot. I don't slam on brake, but usually do the 3 tap method. I don't drive like a teenager or old man. My wife drives in Miami and love to smash her brakes..

With our cx 9, it's just a thing we have to deal with I guess. Parts for front was $36 but back was $18..so clearly they design it to use less materials. Luckily in south Florida many non dealer shop would willing do it for $100+your parts . We even have mobile mechanic services 👍

Brakes completely come down to how you drive. If you live and work in the country where you have an hour of rural Interstate commute each day you can get 100,000 miles or more out of some brake pads.
If you drive an inner city taxi, you'd be lucky to get 20,000 miles out of a set.
If you're hammering on your Spec Miata at Road Atlanta every weekend, you *might* only have to change your pads once in that weekend!

Ya, but seems this guy only major change in his life is the cx. Just telling him that cx-9 back do wear quicker then the front, in my experience. If it was uneven wear, I'm sure shop would tell him too.

Dealer wanted $1100 for brakes and our regular mechanic wants $800 using Napa parts. That’s about what we’d pay for any of our vehicles for pads and rotors replaced on all four corners.

Oh, I can see that would add up quickly. I think PepBoys type location here charge $200, additional 50 per rotor / 40 re surfaces. My Saburu dealers brake estimate was $300, so this is probably my market. Where do you live? Either way, probably best to find a trustworthy shop. Or if you own a house, start a new hobby with working on car.

I’m in Indiana but part of Chicago metro. We have a great mechanic who I trust. Prices are just high in the area. I used to do all the work on my Charger so I can spin a wrench with YouTube playing next to me. lol I just don’t have the time anymore.
