do a compression test, and a leak down test.

If the car over heated and blew the HG then you might have burnt the oil rings out of the pistons. This happened to my dad on a corolla he was working on.

i just went to a shop and asked for a comp test and leak down b/c of an oil burning problem, he said not to waste my money on those and that they don't tell you why you're actually burning oil...

what's your theory on this?
what do the tests do?

Really all they do is check and make sure the compression (make sure everything like the rings and stuff are holding good so it makes a good combustion) is good in a cyl. How many miles are on your car?

just over 113k, it that a lot if it were to be the piston rings?

or could it just be too much carbon build up on the valve seals and the oil is leaking down... hence the reason for the leak down test? lol

That is alot of miles it could be the rings so that might be why. Try using castor oil gtx high mileage, I have seen many cars with over 100k miles that are burning almost a full quart of oil between changes at the shop. We would change the oil to the GTX and man they wouldn't burn any. For an example closer to home my dads GF her GT celica was burning alot of oil they switched type of oil and now it wont burn any. Now if she goes back to cheap oil then it will but not if she uses the GTX. Its $$$ but man its the shit.

Horsepower and torque are all about cylinder pressure. Compression ratio, cam timing, cylinder head flow, and all the rest of the goodies that go into an engine aren't worth much if what enters the cylinder doesn't remain there to be turned into cylinder pressure that will push those pistons around. a compression test will tell you if you have a weak cylinder by comparing the cranking pressures of the cylinders against each other. But its a less-than-accurate way to evaluate how well the engine is sealed.

a cylinder leakdown test will help to evaluate how well each cylinder performs in retaining pressure. you pump a measured amount of air pressure into the cylinder, and the gauge will tell you the percentage of leakage. respectable leakage numbers should be anywhere from 8 to 12 percent with a variation between cylinders of 4 to 5 percent. Poor ring seal on a leakdown test will make itself known with a hissing sound clearly audible out of the PCV valve hole or from the dipstick tube. Say your engine measures 30 percent or more for each cylinder, and it's all running past the rings. This is a good indication that your engine needs rebuilding

Wow thats neat, I have not seen or heard of one of these machines. That is neat. How much does it cost to have one of these test run? I know there is a lot of variables there but just on average?

Oh, I see. Its kinda like a mix between a compression gauge and then those coolant pumps where you can pump up the coolant systems to find leaks. That this is pretty neat.
