how do i know if my shocks or struts are broken?

can someone tell me how I would know this?

cause it seems like when I'm going over bumpy roads the car seems to follow all the bumps .... there doesn't seem to be any kind of damping.... and the thudding sounds are more noticeable than before
I've had the car for 2.5 years 25000 miles....

If the struts are gone your car will go up then down then up then down then up (you get the picture) when you go over a large bump. If the struts are good, you will only go up then down.
