Wanting to get rpf1's, 16x8 +38... I imagine it will rub just a tad bit. Going to be running a 225/50 tire with yellowspeed coils.. Lowering it to a 100% functional level, no tucking here. Anybody have personal experience with this size wheel?

yeah, you'll be rubbing. i ran FD RX7 wheels on my sedan (back in the day), and they are 16x8 +50. i had to use 3mm spacers to clear the hubs and struts, so they became effectively 16x8 +47. I had 215/45-16s and very little clearance with unmodified fenders. the protege5 is supposed to have less clearance with the fenders, compared to the sedan, so i imagine you'll have to do some some fender work to get them to fit without rubbing.

225/50-16 is also a BIG tire for the protege. 195/50-16 is the stock size. 215/45-16 is damn near perfect replacement for stock size, but only a few very high performance tires in that size available. 225/45-16 would be just slightly bigger, but even harder to find.

here's a picture i found of my old set-up...
