Mazda Moly Unavailable

So I call my dealer, the only Mazda dealer in the area and they say they don't have Mazda Moly and want to use Pennzoil instead. What's up with that besides more profit for the dealer? I guess I can get my oil changed anywhere where 0-20 synthetic is used. Your thoughts about this dealer substitution? Is Mazda Moly no longer made?

if you can't get it locally, it's available online from numerous sources. Some dealers have made a business decision not to carry it because they can make more money substituting a cheaper product and most customers don't know the difference.

You can bring your own oil and have the dealership use that. That said, Pennzoil Platinum is pretty good. That's what I use on my Speed3. I haven't had to change the oil on the CX-5 yet.

Update: So I call the dealer parts department and he says they do have the Mazda Moly, but customers have to request it for their oil changes or else they get the Pennzoil instead. He said better gas mileage should happen with the Moly.

Check here if you really want to spend the $$ !

Sounds fishy to me!

I would be VERY surprised if there were any real difference in gas mileage between the two. I also imagine that Mazda does NOT make their own oil! I wonder who really does make it for them?

It can be had cheaper than that if you shop around a bit. Try here http://mazda.handa.com/cx5.html

Mazda worked with a Japanese motor oil refiner (can't recall the name, but it starts with a "U") to develop this oil specifically for SkyActiv engines. Like many others here, I noticed a bump in MPG after first oil change. As for cost, I change my oil twice a year, so even if this stuff is a buck or two more a quart, how much could it add to cost of ownership?

Oh wow that's pricey! I wonder what kind of oil the Mazda dealership I go to uses for the CX-5s. Last time I checked, they use Castrol for all cars. I guess I'll find out when it comes time to change the oil on my CX-5.

Howdy Fvansan,

One of the Forum's Sponsor's has the oil and filter for 39.32, and offers free shipping for
orders over $100.00 so a couple of sets of oil and filter and maybe a little treat for yourself
and you can get the free shipping. That's what I'm going to do so I can keep the Mazda Moly Oil
in for optimum performance and mileage.

Take Care,

Agreed

I think the oil is made by Idetesu or something like that.

at $10+ per qt that has to be one of the more expensive prices. There are numerous sites selling it for <$8. Amazon usually is the last place to check to find a good price on something btw.

Yep..I agree, but they are a good starting point!

Sometimes I can still get no sales tax and free shipping which can help with the price.
I have also found that using "other" vendors on Amazon can net substantial savings...

The parts employee said the oil is $7 something a quart, which I see from the above post, isn't that bad.

$124.75 for 12 quarts of Idemitsu made Mazda Moly oil from Amazon/Avondale Mazda is indeed expensive but it does include expensive shipping as a case of oil is heavy. Like others have already said, you can get 5 Quarts of Mazda 0W-20 Moly Oil, Mazda SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY Oil Filter, and Drain Plug Washer from Med Center Mazda for $39.32 and if you order $100 you can get free shipping. The parts department of my dealer sells Mazda oil for $6.88 per bottle. The service department will use an unknown brand of 0W-20 oil for regular oil change. You have to ask for Mazda Moly oil and pay for the difference.

The bottle of Mazda Moly oil says: "Includes high levels of MOLYBDENUM (Moly) which reduces wear, especially at low temperatures where the anti wear agents are inactive".

Since SkyActiv engines need high idle right after the start-up to heat up the catalytic converter quicker due to its long 4-2-1 exhaust manifold, I guess that's why Mazda recommends us to use moly oil.

I buy it because it's cheap, and you only need 5 quarts, and it lasts 5k miles. Med Mazda or local, same price except pretty much. $75 oil change including filter and labor and a free car wash and a snack while I wait. I don't mind.
