Adding a tachometer

Hello!

I am a new owner of a 1995 Mazda protege DX 1.5 with 158k. Been getting a lot of great answers. Thanks to all!

My car is a manual trans, but it doesn't have a tachometer. Driving without one is a little awkward, since I have to go completely by the sound of the engine. When I go to Autozone, I see that they sell these cheap tachometers.

What is involved with adding one of these? I assume that you have to drill the console and somehow "attach" it to the engine. Is it difficult to do?

Thanks in advance!

I added a tach in a dual pillar pod to my son's Civic CX Hatch. You can see how I did it, here:

Here's a bunch of pillar pods for Protg:

Glowshift has just about any gauge you could imagine. You'll need to locate the tach wire in your car. My son's Civic had one in the engine bay, near the driver's side of the firewall. If you run a search for tach wire 95 Mazda Protg, I'm sure you'll find out where the wire resides.

If you get a double or triple pod, you can also add an oil filter sandwich plate with sensors for oil pressure and oil temperature. I did that with my MX6 GT.

Thanks for the reply. Looks tough. I hate messing with electrical. Maybe I'll pay someone to do it.

Another way to do it is to get an instrument cluster from an LX Protg. You may be able to find one at a junkyard. That cluster will have the tach, built in.

If adding a tachometer from an LX doesn't work in your DX you can run a wire from the diagnostic port to the gauge clustser with the tachometer built in. the purple/white wire will be the signal wire for the tachometer. wire it into a certain PIN in the gauge cluster and it should work.
