NEW CLEAN DIESEL ENGINE LIKELY, BUT NOT CONFIRMED

More interesting is the SkyActiv-D 2.2-liter clean turbo-diesel engine found under the Takeri Concepts long, low and shapely hood. Automotive News says that Mazda executives claim that a turbo-diesel engine will be installed in a U.S.-bound model in 2013, and company spokespeople have taken notice of strong sales for the Volkswagen Passat TDI. Read between the lines, and its pretty clear the 2014 Mazda 6 will offer a turbo-diesel engine.

Mazdas Davis told AN that SkyActiv-D prototypes make 160 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of delicious torque. Compare that to the Passat TDI, which generates 140 horsepower and 236 lb-ft. of torque in a 3,360-lb. sedan. Furthermore, Mazdas 2.2-liter turbo-diesel boasts the worlds lowest compression ratio for a diesel engine, according to the automaker. That means it burns cleaner and emits fewer nitrides of oxygen (NOx), producing virtually no soot. Unlike many turbo-diesel engines, Mazdas SkyActiv-D does not require a fluid after-treatment system such as AdBlue to clean up the exhaust.
