Upgrade from single to 6 disc

I currently have a 2005 single disc player with the sat feature in my 2004 Mazda 3 . I have my old 6 disc player which is from the 2004 model so it does not have the sat feature. What I would like to know if anyone knows if you can detach the CD portion of the deck and replace it with a new different one (ie upgrade my single to a 6 disc). I realize the issues of firmware and hardware compatibility, but if it would be possible, I would absolutely love my car stereo. Anybody tried this in the past?

The stereo system is modular so you should be able to swap out the single-cd player with the changer by simply removing a few bolts on the unit (assuming of course that the firmware is compatible).
