So I bought a 1994 Protege LX with 111k miles. The HOLD light is flashing when I drive the car, and the speedometer doesn't work. I took the car to my friend's shop, and he plugged it up and said the solenoids in the transmission are bad and the entire transmission needs to be replaced. The mech said the trans was locked in 3rd gear. I drove the car (slowly, because it needs brake pads/rotors on the front) and the car did shift from 1-2 as indicated by the tachometer.
My question is: Anyone ever had this problem with the speedo not working? I was hoping it's something else, but the transmission does shift harshly but the car still runs.
