Protege5 Fiberglass Subwoofer Box

This is far better than the factory sub!!! Takes up less cuft in the hatch too! How often can you actually put soemthing in that little cubby on the left? Never!!! And the floor isn't raised like the factory sub.

It isn't secured yet, prolly only needs some velcro. If you want one, I'll help you make one sometime this summer. However, it will take up more space if you want to install a 12". No insulation...just popped it right in. The carpet extends about 1" over the edge on all sides which keeps it from rattling.

that's okay..ya, i'll prob need your skilz!(yes)

MAN seeing how easy it is i might hire your skillz! not easy but stealth and nice since I want some more UMPH in my system but nothing crazy.

This was by far the easiest FG project I have done. I wouldn't mind helping anyone local with it...for a fraction of the cost of paying a shop to do it. I dunno, $50 plus supplies is pretty fair. Think about it.

Shoot I would pay you that and some to make me one! Hell of a nice job. Try Gorilla Glue instead of liquid nails.

Takes to long, Hot glue be the way to go. Will easily hold in the ring and tighly in a few seconds.

Thinking .... (lol2)

Yes...next time I will use hot glue...I had the gun handy...but I didn't have any sticks left. Later I ended up going out to get some anyway. Doh!

Gorrilla glue does not work...see the dribbles in the photo...thats the gorilla glue. It takes hours to foam up.

Supplies for the job...

* 1/2" or 3/4" mdf (2x4 sheet from Home Depot is enough)
* Fiberglass resin (large can)
* Fiberglass matte (3-4 packets)
* 5-10 cheapo paint brushes
* 2-3 mixing cups (with 4/8/12/16 oz markings)
* 3 rolls of painters masking tape (2 1" and 1 1/2")
* car wax (spread over tape to help mold release)
* drop cloths and clothes you don't care about
* lots of rubber gloves
* resporator (or hold your breath and work outdoors)
* 1 yard of fleece (pick your favorite pattern!)
* 1 yard of un-backed trunk liner
* 1 can of 3M Super 77 spray adhesive
* hotglue and glue gun
* staples and staple gun
* router and circle jig (or jig saw...but router is better)
* jig saw
* orbital sander with several 40-60 grit sanding discs
* sharp razor blades for cutting carpet
* drill with assorted drill bits
* 3' wooden dowl
* opt. polyfill and sound deadener
* opt. velcro to keep it from moving around

You can find pretty much all of this at Home Depot. Brushes and mixing cups are cheapest at Walmart (you can get a pack of 4 brushes for like $1.50 instead of pay $1/each at Home Depot). I got a pack of 50 rubber gloves at Walmart too. Fleece was at Walmart. Carpet was from www.selectproducts.com. I didn't use polyfill or sound deadener but if I had some I'd throw it in.

that looks great, and it makes me want to do it for my mp5. if i do i will have 2 12" one on each side.

I've seen people with 2 12"s before, on this board actually. 12"s need considerably more volume and have a larger and deeper magnet structure. The IDQ 10 is an SQ sub and is relatively small on the back. That was how I could tuck it in real tight.

If someone was local and wanted one for the MS3 I'd help them out...but since I don't have one myself I really couldn't do it. Furthermore, I think a guy is already making them for the 3. http://mazda3stealthbox.com/ You can find details at one of the other Mazda3 forums.

question, would it be possible to do a 10 in sub on both sides? or would that be over kill? This design is exactly what I have always wanted for some time because it does not kill the trunk space yet gives nice performance. If I keep the p5 post summer I will def do this. I should know in a few weeks what happens, once I graduate.

if i were to do 10" on each side too...do they need to be shallow? or regular 10" subs should fit too...i kno there is a bit more room on the right side since the door for the jack is there

also...about how much did it cost in terms of material o_O

Its not a matter of how deep the sub is, its a matter of how far you want them to stick out. You could build the box for anything in there, just how far into the trunk do you want the baffle.

I would not try to use a very deep sub like a Brahma or JL W6 but a typicly entry level to mid level sub will be easy enough to work with.

Materials cost anywhere from $75-100 depending on what you already have and not including power tools obviously. See my list above.

You can install a 15" 2 15"s whatever...but the larger the sub the more airspace, the deeper the sub, the more it will stick out. Space is about equal on both sides. The left has the gas tank filler and light to contend with, the right has the jack (which you can remove but makes it a little more complicated).

Personally, I would stick with 10"s. It leaves you with much more useable space.
