Timing belt on Tribute: when to change?

Hi all,

We have a Mazda Tribute 2003 2 litre GXi, with 30 000 mls on the clock. We do approximately 10,000 miles/yr in it.

2 questions:

1) What sort of timing belt is it? (i.e chain or rubber belt)

2) When is the best time to have it changed in order to avoid any
serious problems?

PS: I have been told (by non Mazda specialist) that it is a belt and to change the pulleys AND the tensioner after 4 yrs / 60,ooo mls, what do you think?

what does it say in your owners manual?

Thanks njaremka.

It says 90,000 miles but I have read somewhere that ALL belts should really be changed after 4 yrs, irrespective of mileage.

Should I have the pulleys and tensioner replaced as well?

its a good idea to have everything in there replaced while you are in there. no need in doing the same job twice.

Yes, you're right, I will.

Are these belts known to snap after 4 or 5 yrs?

What sort of cost are you talking about if they do? (is it an engine replacement job?)
